On February 25,1924, the Founding President René Delamare, surrounded
by twenty members, received the Charter no. 1690:
After Paris, Lyon and Toulouse, the Rotary Club of Nice, the fourth
club established in France, our club was born that day. It grew
rapidly to count a hundred members in 1937.
Meanwhile, because of the importance of the city, its location and its
tourist boom, our club participated in the expansion of the Rotary
movement since it was originally the creation of clubs Antibes, St
Raphaël, Monaco, etc..
From the social point of view, the club is dedicated to numerous works
relating to children and youth.
In 1926, the work of the "Abandoned Mother" later became "Saving the
infant" designed to help young mothers without support, which was
really an early form of Social Security.
But during this first period of its history - between the wars - the
culmination of the life of our club was the1937
Convention, bringing together 8,000 participants,
inaugurated by the President of the Republic Albert Lebrun, during
which was elected the following year, Maurice Duperrey, the only
French President of Rotary International.
This appointment had the effect of a helping hand, an excellent
reputation for Rotary which was poorly understood at that time in
France. On the other hand, a great advertisement for Nice and the
Cote d'Azur in the world.
Bringing the club into popular respect the club took action
with great social dynamics: implementing the
reclassification of prisoners and deportees, job sponsorship
of orphans and victims of war, treatment of children in
Vichy, and equipment for rooms in the Lenval Hospital, etc..
To feed its coffers beyond the contributions, the club organized a
large number of events, galas, charity evenings, rallies, concerts,
nights of Rotary, etc..

In 1964, the club's membership reached 169 members; a second club was
established in Nice: Nice-Est (now merged into Riviera Nice-Côte
d'Azur)
Subsequently, Nice West in 1967 (now merged into Nice-Riviera Côte
d'Azur), Nice-Northwest in 1972 (today Massena Nice), Nice, Baie des
Anges in 1981, Nice-Acropolis in 1984, county of Nice - Nice 1988 and
1998 Maeterlinck, were born, evidence of the vitality of our Rotary
Club.
But the most important events after the war, not only for the club in
Nice, but for all the clubs in the Côte d'Azur and France were the
Rotary International
Conventions of 1967 and 1995, making Nice the
only European city to be chosen three times outside the Americas.
The
1995 Convention was attended by more than 34,000
participants, making it the third largest Rotary event held to date in
the world after Tokyo and Seoul, and in the Riviera, the largest
conference that the region has ever received.
Today, each President with his ability, his personality and his
initiatives, contributes to the work begun by his predecessors for
the reputation of our club.
Remember that the Nice Club gave the Rotary International:
Governor Charles Jourdan-Gassin (1939-1946), then
Vice-President International (1946-1947)
Governor Edmond Renaud (1949- 1950)
GovernorJosé Appietto (1963- 1964)
Governor Robert Schollemann (1968-1969), then VicePresident
International (1974-1975)
Governor José Machiavello (1989- 1990)
Governor Robert Wattiez (1994- 1995)
