THE HISTORY OF DISTRICT 2240, Czech Republic and Slovak Republic

A Part of Our History of Rotary in Europe

ROTARY TRADITION IN THE FORMER CZECHOSLOVAKIA UP TO 1938
The first club in the former Czechoslavakia was the Rotary Club of Prague founded in 1925 which was followed within a few years by the Rotary Club of Pilsen founded in 1927.

District 66 was established in 1927 with 47 active Clubs in 1938, the 3rd biggest District in Europe

SERIOUS TIMES . . .
1938-1945 – Nazism banned Rotary in Czechoslovakia
1946-1948 – short period of Rotary restoration after the WW2
1948-1989 – complete abolishment of Rotary by the Communists

NEW FREE TIMES AFTER THE VELVET REVOLUTION 1989 
Re-establishment of the former Rotary Clubs and founding of new Clubs in the framework of District 1920 (Austria-West) together with great hospitality, friendship and support from different Rotary Clubs worldwide, quick incorporation and acceptance into the Rotary family

In 1999, the independent international Rotary District 2240 inaugurated officially.
District 2240 now includes 17 very active Rotary Clubs in the Slovak Republic and 43 very active Rotary Clubs in the Czech Republic
There are also 11 Rotaract Clubs overall and it grows steadily

The last but not the least one RC Telč chartered on May, 6, 2006.

Manifold D 2240 activities :-

   in all Rotary service avenues since 1999/2000 with a rich international cooperation -
   - ČESKÝ KRUMLOV - UNESCO World Cultural Heritage;
   - Very successful District Conference in May 2006, in Český Krumlov with DG Otakar Veselý and US Ambassador William Cabaniss; 
   - Handing-over the District Governor's insignia;
   - Roman Gronský appointed District Governor for 2006/07;
   - Rotary Club of Pilsen serves as a good example of D. 2240 activities -
                  Humanitarian services - Care for those handicapped
                  Youth exchange


Up to now our District has hosted fifteen Inter Country Meetings and experienced friendly contacts and cooperation with our German neighbors.

 
Social-cultural projects - Cultural activities of Club members -
  - The delegate to the Council on Legislation for 2007 in Chicago, was again a member from the Rotary Club of Pilsen.
  - Pilsen City and Pilsen Rotary Club entered into partnership arrangements with Birmingham, Alabama, USA, and in 2005, established a Summer Language School.

RC Pilsen recent achievements:-
  - International RWMP Seminar for 15 European Rotary Magazines Editors-in-Chief met in Pilsen in August. 2006;
  - William Cabaniss, the US Ambassador was involved in these RWMP Seminar negotiations;
  - Accomplishment of the MG-Project # 59421 of RC Birmingham, Alabama, USA & RC Pilsen
