International Assembly of RI |
The
International Assembly educates motivates, and inspires district
governors-elect to lead Rotarians in their districts. |
The International Assembly, is
Rotary's annual event for governors-elect. It was first held in Chicago
in 1919. Between 1928-1950, it was held before the convention, at a site
near the convention city. It then moved to Lake Placid, New York, for
more than 20 years. In recent years, it has been held in San Diego,
California, USA. It's now held much earlier to allow incoming governors
more time to prepare for their year as governor. Through plenary sessions, group discussions, networking activities, and social events, future governors get the hands-on information they’ll need for the coming year. This training meeting features speeches by the RI president-elect, Rotary Foundation trustee chair-elect, and other senior Rotary leaders, such as past RI presidents, current RI directors, and past Foundation trustee chairs, who share their knowledge and experience. Participants exchange information and ideas with other governors-elect from around the world, creating bonds that foster future projects and a lifetime of friendship. When, at midnight on June 30, 1941 Rotary leadership fell upon new shoulders throughout the world, Rotary's highest office, the international Presidency, passed between these Rotarians—from Armando de Arruda Pereira of Sáo Paulo, Brazil, to Attorney Tom J. Davis, of Butte, Montana. A year ago, in his inaugural address and guest editorial, President Pereira called for "More Clubs . . . More Friends!" Rotarians responded, despite world upheaval, with 137 new Clubs, 56 of them in his own hemisphere, and quickly came to regard this smiling engineer as their symbol of growing inter-American understanding. This photograph was taken during theInternational Assembly at Colorado Springs, Colorado in the week preceding Rotary's 1941 Convention at Denver. |
