Rotary Club of Sarajevo, the First Club of Bosnia Herzegovena

Rotary International District 1910

Part of our History of Rotary in Europe

In the mid 1930-ies, three Rotary Clubs existed and operated in the country now known as Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In those days, this country was a part of the Republic of Jugoslavia.
Those clubs were Banja Luka, Brcko and Sarajevo, thead latter being first formed in 1931).
As in most of western and eastern Europe, World War II caused the disbanding of all clubs, and those clubs all ceased to operate effectivbely from 1941.
After the war, political decrees prevented gatherings and meetings of this kind and so it was almost 60-odd years later, namely in mid-1998, with great help from Mr. Peter Guta (Switzerland) and Mr Ive Husic (Croatia), that a group of enthusiasts gathered in Sarajevo restaurant "Dom Pisaca" and began to socialize and develop the idea of Rotarians.

There they enlisted the support of Hussein Hasibovic, Ljubomir Berberovic, Faruk Dizdarevic, Tanja Perko, Lennart Nilsson, Hamzalija Hotić, Mladen Sutej, Werner Altekruger, Tanja Čengić, Seid Hasanefendić, Bogicevic, ... and many others.
Selfless assistance and an enormous contribution was made by Mr. Hans Jervestam (Sweden), whom we are always happy to remember and are proud to mention.

On 24 March 1999, our club submitted its formal application for admission to Rotary International; later a certificate arrives in the Olympic city on 31.AUGUST 1999.
A grand Chartering Ceremony was held on 29 January 2000, at the Holiday Inn, Sarajevo, with over 150 participants.
Mr. Faruk Dizdarevic was given the honor and great responsibility of being the first president of the "new-old" Rotary Club of Sarajevo.
We were so pleased to re-enter this highly respected world-wide association.

In 2001,thead Rotary Club Sarajevo sponsored the Sarejevo Rotaract - an association of young Rotarians, and continues to provide support to these future Rotarians.
