Rotary Club of Gaborone, the First Club of Botswana

Rotary International District 9250
Part of our History of Africa

The Rotary Club of Gaborone was chartered on 16 January 1972. It is the oldest and largest of the 5 Rotary Clubs in Botswana as well as being one of the largest clubs in Rotary District 9250, which covers Botswana, Northern RSA, Swaziland and Southern Mozambique.

The contribution of the Club to the Botswana community has been immense. Since it supplied a Braille typewriter to the Mochudi Resource Centre For The Blind in 1972, the Club has provided many organisations and individuals with books, blankets, groceries, furniture, wheelchairs, computers and communication equipment throughout Centre and Southern Botswana.

In the past 18 months, Rotarians from this Club have travelled to Ghanzi, Hukuntsi, Kang, Tshabong and Serowe to donate wheelchairs to disabled individuals.
Wheelchairs have also been donated to the disabled in Gaborone, Mochudi and Ramotswe.
The total number of wheelchairs donated by the club to date is 140 and we are planning to donate in excess of 200 in the year ahead.

Other major projects of the Club are the refurbishment of Deborah Retief Memorial Hospital in Mochudi in the 1990s at a cost of over P 1.8 million, the building of the Kamagelo Day Care Centre in Mogoditshane in 2004/5 at a cost of over P 2.5 million and the Bana ba Keletso Orphans Day Care Centre Phase II construction which was completed in 2006 at a cost in excess of P 850 000.

In addition the Club has arranged medical camps which have brought diagnosis to disadvantaged villagers in the surrounding Gaborone area, collected foodstuffs from the public for donation to the orphans, as well as donating P 25 000 in May 2006 to the formation of Tshedisa Institute which is a care centre for Aids Care Workers and Medical Staff.
