Rotary Club of Pointe-a-Pitre, the First Club of Guadeloupe

Rotary International District 7030

Part of our History of the Caribbean
française

That's 42 years ago, it was in February 1957, that our deceased friends, George BOYD, father of our late Past President Willy BOYD, and Ferdinand PETRELLUZZI met during a maritime stop-over Georges Lemaître-Mory, also deceased, and Jean-Marie Lemaître-MORY his son who was in 1971-1972, Governor of District 166, now District 1660 which includes the Rotary Clubs of PARIS.
Georges Lemaitre-Mory, a Rotarian for many years, and his son had convinced our friends above to create a Rotary Club in POINTE A PITRE, to enable men of different activities to meet, to be assessed and to work for the good of GUADELOUPE as part of an international organization , outside of their business.

The constituent meeting took place shortly after at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Pointe A Pitre.
An interim committee was set up under the chairmanship of our late Roger DAMOISEAU.
He was responsible for identifying and encouraging the founding members and to contact the authorities of Rotary International.

The task was not easy, the rule of attendance at the time seemed insurmountable to all.
Finally 32 founding members met in April 1957.
During the meeting, the Statutes of the future Club were established and sent to Evanston, home of Rotary International.

The first committee was composed of:
President: Roger DAMOISEAU
Vice President: Henry THOMASSET
Treasurer: Robert Lacascade
Secretary: Serge MEES
Protocol: Jean BRIE
Members: François Mercier, François MIMI, Jean HELOIN.

They were pioneers who knew nothing of Rotary, no procedures or habits, but animated by the sincere desire to serve.
Gradually, the Rotary Club of Pointe A Pitre took shape and, in October 1957, during the first dinner organized its members, the Charter was presented by Rotarian ROGERS from the Board of Rotary International, Evanston.
The club was now an official member of Rotary International.

The Charter reads:"This document certifies that the Rotary Club to POINTE A PITRE GUADELOUPE having been duly organized, having made a commitment through its leaders and its members to comply with the Statutes and Bylaws of Rotary International - which commitment is confirmed by the acceptance of the Charter - is now a regular member of Rotary International, and which now enjoys all the rights and privileges of that membership. "

Since then, the Rotary Club POINTE A PITRE has grown stronger and bigger.
From an early role of 32 members in 1972, the club had grown to as many as 66 members which was sustained for a number of years, before stabilizing at 40 members as it is today, that given the deaths, departures and defections also.
The club has been led by 42 committees, the first being kept for two consecutive years in office.
It is not irrelevant to recall the names of the Past-Presidents and the President today.
All these officials have been keen in implementing the ideals of Rotary, to create bonds of sincere friendship, to unite the members of the Club and to develop its activities and influence of the service to GUADELOUPE.
