Rotary Clubs of Kaunas & Vilnius, the First Clubs of Lithuania

Rotary International District 1480

Part of our section on the History of Rotary in Europe

In 1934, the capital of LITHUANIA was the city of Kaunas and it was there that the first Rotary Club of the country was inaugurated on November 6, 1934. The new club received its charter the following May in the Town Hall in Kaunas from District Governor and later RI Director Carl Harald Trolle of Kalmar, Sweden. The Charter President, Karolis Zalkauskas, a lawyer by profession, remained the club's President until the club was forced to close down in 1940, when Soviet forces having occupied Lithuania and the other Baltic countries, forbade all Rotary activities in Lithuania. At the time, there were two clubs in the country, Kaunas and Slauliai, the latter having been inaugurated on September 17, 1937. A third club, in Klaipeda, was inaugurated on April 25, 1938 but it had already had its charter terminated on June 16, 1939. The other Lithuanian Clubs were terminated on October 10, 1940. Charter programs and other relevant material can be found in the RI Archives.

In 1992, Rotary returned to Lithuania, with a club in the new capital of Vilnius, and within a year both Kaunas and Slauliai had clubs as well.

Pirmųjų Rotary klubų istorija internete

Rimvydas Žiemys iš Vilkaviškio RK nurodė svetainę The Original Rotary Global History, kurioje galima rasti informacijos apie įvairių šalių pirmuosius Rotary klubus. Apie Lietuvoje 1934 metais įsikūrusį pirmąjį Rotary klubą pastabose rašoma: "Kaunas, Lituania was first club in country from 14 November, 1934 till 10 October 1940, but was not the first club to be granted re-admittance in the 1990s". Svetainės steigėjas Jack Selway norėtų daugiau sužinoti apie Rotary judėjimą Lietuvoje, todėl turintys informacijos prašome ją persiųsti John M. Sekway (nuoroda aktyvi).
