Rotary Club of Victoria, the First Club of the Republic of Seychelles

Rotary International District 9220

A Part of Our History of Rotary in Africa

Discovered for the first time on 1502 by a navigator who didn’t give them a name.

The Portuguese called them later the "Seven Sisters."

In 1756, Seychelles became a French colony under the name of Séchelles, named for Moreau of Séchelles, Minister of Finance under the kingdom of Louis XV. During the XIX century,  the English gave them the name of Seychelles. Seychelles remained an English colony from 1903 until 1976, when the archipelago gained independence, becoming the Republic of Seychelles.

The Seychelles has a total land area of 455 sq. km and 491 km of coastline.

There is one Rotary Club in Seychelles called the Rotary Club of Victoria. The club meets at the Coral Stand Hotel on Tuesdays at lunch time from 12:30 to 14:00.

Rotary Club of Victoria in Seychelles was chartered in 1969. The meetings are conducted in English and there are about 30 members from a diverse range of backgrounds and professions. The club is quite active in the local community and runs many popular events and projects each year.

The Rotary Club of Victoria is part of Rotary District 9220.

This district also covers Mauritius, Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte, Djibouti and Comoros.

The district is predominantly French speaking.
