HISTORY OF ROTARY IN NIGER

A part of our History of Rotary in Western Africa

Mr Jean KABA, was one of the founding members of the Rotary Club of Niamey and their first treasurer in 1967. Until he died in 1980, Jean Kaba had an attendance of 100%.
From the early days, the club members were in their majority, expatriates.

In 1988 Kaba's son, Gaston Kaba joined the Rotary Club of Niamey. First Club of the region

He in turn was President in 1993-94 and was the one who inducted the first 3 women Rotarians in Niger.

Then in 2000, with 4 other club members from RC Niamey, Gaston Kaba was elected to create the Rotary Club of Niamey-Croix-du-Sud.

That club received its charter in 2000 and Gaston Kaba was President in 2006-2007.

He has also been Chairman of the National PolioPlus Committee in Niger since 1988 and was for many years a member of African Regional PolioPlus Committee. Trustee Majiyagbe was for some years, also the Chairman of the committee.

In 2005, the District 9100 Governor, Laurence Kouassi, appointed Kaba to help create the RC of Niamey-Gaweye in Niamey and the RC of Agadez in Agadez (Northern Niger).

Niger, like most of Western Africa, was "Undistricted" from its first club until 1972 when district 210 was created to cover the entire western African region.

In 1978 the district was renumbered to 910 and in 1991 to District 9100. It is presently in Zone 20A which covers the entire southern half of Africa.
