The storm later struck central Cuba shortly thereafter at its peak of 135 mph (215 km/h) on the same day, weakening to a Category 3 hurricane after crossing the island. The storm continued to slowly weaken as it moved through the Bahamas the following day. The storm caused severe damage and a total of 3,033 death in Cuba. |
