 Douglas Howland was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Calgary, Canada when it was formed in 1914 and later, in 1938/39 was appointed President after serving a number of years as Treasurer and Secretary.

 Rowland was a Committee Member of Rotary International and over a period, served as Ambassador to South East Asia, Europe and eventually to the Middle East. In these roles he established many new clubs in those regions. 

Between 1932 and 1934, Howland in his capacity as Ambassador for Rotary International, was responsible for the formation of the following Rotary Clubs -
 India
   Amritsar
   Bangalore
   Amedabad
   Cawnpore
   Lucknow
   Mysore
   Poona
 Pakistan
   Karachi
 Indonesia - Java
   Djember
   Cheribon
   Magelang
 Indonesia - Sumatra
   Palembang
 China
   Amoy
   Foochow
   Hankow
   Nanking
 During his journeys he also visited existing clubs in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and the Philippines.
 He returned to Canada in 1934.
