#1. Chennai Kilpauk City, Tamil Nadu, was the first Peace City in India having been declared on 20 December 1999 by the RC Chennaio Kilpauk, D3230 and initiated by Pres. Shanti Samuel Eddy.

Chandigarh (City Beautiful) was declared as the Rotary Peace City on 12 December 2003. Chandigarh is the second city after Chennai in the country to be declared a Rotary Peace City.

The concept of Rotary District Peace Communities was conceived in Wagga Wagga, NSW, Australia by Rotarian Tony Quinlivan and the city became the first Peace Community on February 23, 1993. Since then, Peace Communities have been proclaimed in different parts of the globe.

Rotary Club of Chandigarh set up a Rotary Peace Monument at Sukhna Lake and on 12th December 2003, the Club has been declared as 'Rotary Peace City'.  Rotary International President Jonathan B. Majiyagbe was in the city to formally unveil the monument and hand it over to His Excellency Justice O.P. Verma, the Governor of Panjab and Administrator UT, Chandigarh, at a glittering function at the lake.  The project had been the brain child of PRIP R.K. Saboo, who is also the Special Administrator of Rotary Peace Communities worldwide, and executed under the dynamic leadership of DG Kawal Bedi and Pres. Vijay Wadhawan.

The Rotary Club of Chandigarh, under the leadership of President Ms Vijay Wadhawan, and the guidance of Past Rotary International President Rajendra K. Saboo, who is also the Special Ambassador for Rotary District Peace Communities projects around the world, has conceived this project to make the city Rotary Peace City.

A Rs 5-lakh "Peace Monument" has been erected at the Sukhna Lake. The "Peace Monument" has been designed by Rotarian Sandeep Luthra and his wife Suchita.

The world President of Rotary International Mr Jonathan B. Majiyagbe paid a two-day visit to Chandigarh.

Arriving here on the afternoon of December 11, he addressed a meeting of about 1,000 Rotarians from all over the region at Zirakpur.

On Friday, Mr Majiyagbe formally handed over the monument to Justice O.P. Verma (retd), the Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT, Chandigarh.
