The HISTORY OF ROTARACT
IN CYPRUS

a part of our History of Rotaract in Europe
History   Clubs   Districts

 History
The first four Rotaract clubs in this entire region were in Egypt beginning in 1968 and it was not until the formation of Rotaract Nicosia  that Cyprus joined the other clubs in the District.
The history of each country is therefore repeated here.

The idea of forming the district 2450 started at the end of 1977, the reason for this idea was the increase in the number of clubs, as the number changed from 5 to 7 clubs which were (Mansoura, Cairo, Giza, Heliopolis, Alexandria, South Cairo and Tanta).
Also the idea of forming El–Shams club was accruing, as Mr. Mustafa Fayez Mansour who was very interested with Rotaract activities had been chosen responsible for the Rotaract clubs in the district.
Eng. Mootaz Al Motassem was responsible for collecting the clubs and an arrangement had been made to form D2450.

The 1st Phase of forming D2450 was arranging a meeting for all the clubs and strengthening the connection between them and exchanging their different projects.
The 1st meeting between the clubs was on 23 December 1977 at Al–Ahram Newspaper, and then a Conference took place on 3 February 1978 to launch D2450 and the 1st representative was chosen.
After that, joint trips and projects followed and the image of ROTARACT started to shape in front of all the clubs.

Conference Recommendations:
1. Organizing join projects between clubs in order to strengthen the relations between the members.
2. Submitting a suggestion to Rotary International to study the possibility of raising the membership age limit to 30 years or allowing the members who reached 28 years to be a consulting committee in order for the members to benefit from their experience.
3. Writing news about Rotaract in Rotary Magazine.
4. Setting 1st Friday of November 1978 to organize the 2nd RAC Meeting in Al-Ahram Newspaper Building.

 Districts

The Rotaract Clubs in Cyprus are all classified under District 2450, the same district number as the Rotary Clubs.
District 2450 covers 10 countries in western Asia, northern Africa and the Middle East.
With the introduction of Rotaract to Cyprus, the country became the fourth country in this District after Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
Cyprus became the fourth country to enter District 2450 with the formation of its first club in 1986. 6 more countries were to join the district over the next 25 years.
 Clubs
The first club in Cyprus was Limasol Amathusia which was formed in 1986, followed later by Rotaract Nicosia but at December 2010, there are eight clubs throughout the country with 4 clubs in Nicosia. 4 of these clubs have all recorded the same charter date - 15 June 2011.
