ROTARY DIABETES ACTION GROUP
In recent years, World Diabetes Day has focused particularly on
raising awareness of the complications of diabetes affecting the
heart, eyes, kidneys, and feet. In 2007, the United Nations
marked the Day for the first time with the passage of the United
Nations World Diabetes Day Resolution in December 2006, which
made the existing World Diabetes Day an official United Nations
World Health Day.
Exciting news this week. Rotary International formally approved a new Rotary Action
Group for diabetes.
This is a highly significant step that recognizes the increasing involvement of Rotarians
in diabetes projects worldwide and the need for civil society to engineer a suitable
response to the growing pandemic.
The many diabetes projects that Rotarians are involved in include IDF’s own Life for a
Child Program and foot-care projects soon to be established in the Caribbean.
Rotarian Action Groups conduct international service projects that further the goals of
the organization.
It was a Rotary Action Group that led the tremendous work that Rotary have undertaken to
tackle polio worldwide. The 'Unite for Diabetes'
campaign, led by the International Diabetes Federation, resulted
in United Nations Resolution 61/225 World Diabetes Day. This
landmark resolution also recognized diabetes as "a chronic,
debilitating and costly disease associated with major
complications that pose severe risks for families, countries and
the entire world."
