Honorary Rotarian Phyllis Giersch, of the Rotary Club of Madera, California, USA, conceived the idea for a Rotarian Fellowship of Quilters and Fiber Artists in 2003.

Phyllis is a professional quilter and former owner of a quilt store called The Patchwork Pansy, in Madera. She is the founder of the Heart of California Quilt Guild and has taught quilting classes locally and in Australia. Phyllis has been highly recognized for her work.

To form a Rotary Fellowship, an application must be signed by Rotary District Governors from a minimum of three countries and approved by the Board of Directors of Rotary International. The countries forming the charter RFQFA are Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

The goal for this fellowship is to share ideas, techniques, articles, service projects, and stories of interest regarding the fiber arts. The fellowship is open to Rotarians, partners or widows of Rotarians, Inner Wheel members, and members of Rotaract who work in this art form or have an appreciation for its beauty, design and history around the globe.

The members of the Rotarian Fellowship of Quilters and Fiber Artists represent 12 Rotarian countries. Our members quilt, knit, crochet, weave, and enjoy other of the fiber arts. They use their talents and resources to do individual projects to provide handmade items of comfort to raising money in auctions.

Once a year our fellowship has a collective project and members donate a block or an item which go on display at the International Conventions. These items are exchanged for donations made to the Polio Challenge. Our work has raised thousands of dollars over the past few years.

The photo below was taken at the RI Convention in Birmingham and shows some of the handmade items that raised money for polio.
