Examples of the Four Way Test in Business
From the Rotary Club of New York City #6 in a 2003 club newsletter
came this item from Matts O. Ingemanson
Rotarian Taylor Gray sent the following very interesting information about Walgreens:

I was just reading the Walgreens annual report. In 1956, Charles R. Walgreen Jr, the son of the drug store chain's founder, adopted the Rotary Four Way Test as the firm's set of guiding principles to guide employees to consider when making decisions about what they think, say or do. It now hangs in the nearly 4,000 stores that Walgreens runs.

Regards,

Taylor

Charles R. Walgreen, Jr. - Former Chairman and PresidentThe Four-Way Test

One of Charles R. Walgreen, Jr.'s most enduring contributions to the company that his father founded has been the Four-Way Test, written by a friend at Rotary International and adapted for Walgreens in 1955. Based on the ethical business principles he learned from his father, these four questions are the foundation of the Walgreen Way:

Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendship?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
What do these questions have to do with diversity?

Everything.

At Walgreens, we care deeply about treating everyone with respect. As it is stated in the Walgreen Creed, "We believe in courtesy, in kindness, in generosity, in cheer, in friendship, and in honest competition." That's the right way to do business, and it gives Walgreens a tremendous competitive advantage.

Four way test sleeps…

- Rtr. Rajesh Bajracharya (7th Sept. 2005)

Everyone needs a break
Accomplishing a huge task
Everyone does need a break
When one courageously unveils real mask
Everyone needs a break

So does every Rotary
Rotary needs a break
Accomplishing Herculean task
Each Rotary at work needs a break
But friends, that’s when 4 way test sleeps…

For every time, Rotary deceives
Club selfishness and the four way test sleeps
Whenever raw overtaking rules are at work
Without heart, the four way test sleeps
Whenever action overtakes vision, it sleeps…

Every time the four way test sleeps
Evil through dreams it creeps
For every time, Rotaract is forgotten
Through the tiredness, enters sins rotten
For every time Rotary rushes,
The truth, without creating fusses
The four way test slips, it simply just sleeps!

Yours-in-Rotaract
