Biography - William C. Carter |
PRIP Carter of Old Windsor, Berkshire, England, died on 15 April 2005 |
In his
youth, he served as Adjutant to an Indian training regiment and it was
in Bombay that he married an old friend, and opera singer from
Sheffield, Olive. He joined the Battersea Rotary Club in 1948 at which
time he was working as a solicitor. Bill became club President in 1954
and a little later, he was appointed District Chairman/Governor for the
London area. Following this, he moved onto become President of RIBI in
the year 1963/4 and 10 years later he was honoured by appointment as
President of RI at a time when air travel was easier. During his year in
office, he was the first PRI to travel extensively by air and is
credited with visiting over 150 states. His discussions with the King of Siam during a brief courtesy visit, led to a 2 hour meeting, to the worry of courtiers, during which they devised a Rotary scheme to assist farmers in outlying areas. Bill was honoured by many countries among them the USA and France. Back in Battersea, he was the founder of the St Marks Centre for the rehabilitation of ex-prisoners. As one obituary remarked, Bill was essentially an English gentleman. |
