Why I Am A Rotarian

August 19, 2007

Little do we know when we are leaving a lasting impression on a young person! Years later that same child, turned busy adult, parent, career person, and volunteer, was asked to join Rotary. Without hesitation the answer was "Yes"!

Who was that original Rotarian who made such an impression?  It was my dear friend's father, Joe (Mr. G to me then).

Rotary was, oh, so important to him! Even as an elementary student where my world seemed to revolve around recess, piano practice, spelling sit-downs, and riding my bicycle within the allowed perimeters of our neighborhood, I was unknowingly impressed. When Joe couldn't pick us up at noon from school and take my friend and I home for lunch, it was because "this is Rotary Day".

I soon learned Rotary must be something very important in his life. Joe was a busy business owner but everything seemed to step aside that special hour each week. He was a man of great character. Move ahead 40 years: I was proud and honored to be asked to be among the first wave of women Rotarians.

What an impact this wonderful organization has had on my life! Service Above Self! Service acts that I cannot do alone can be accomplished because I am a part of this powerful, caring, successful, and highly respected organization. I can hold my head high and say...

"I helped to" …

·        eliminate Polio,

·        educate thousands of students,

·        build numerous houses, schools, medical clinics,

·        I am helping promote peace and global understanding.

·        I am doing all of this because I am a Rotarian!

Rotary cares for others. Rotary is a leader in our community and worldwide. Rotary allowed me to develop new leadership skills and responsibilities. Rotary broadened my circle of friends. Rotary doesn't just talk about doing good work...Rotary does the work! Rotary Shares! Rotary Leads The Way! I am proud of this organization and my membership.

This is why I am a Rotarian!
