CHARLES COTTEN

When I was a young man, my goal in life was to graduate from high school since no one in my family had every done so. My senior year, a student teacher trainee came to our school to complete the practicum for her teaching certificate. Her first day in class she asked each of us our name and where we were going to college. When she came to me, I gave her my name and told her I was going to work after graduation. She looked me in the eye and said, "No, you are going to college!" Every day for the six weeks she was there, she would ask me where I was going to college?

Her persistence changed my life and I have been trying to repay that debt ever since. I always think of her as just an ordinary person who did an extraordinary thing and created a miracle in my life.

To me, she personifies Rotarians and what we do for people. Rotary is a unique organization that allows people to rise above themselves and create miracles in people's lives. Every time I work on a project or read about a project I am reminded of what was done for me and that is why I am a Rotarian.
