Ted RoseI joined Rotary in 1980 at the invitation of a business client who thought I would enjoy Thursday evening steak-and-potato dinner meetings and male camaraderie. In fact, I did.

But all that changed in 1984 when I made my first trip to Mexico. I met some very poor children in a tiny village on the slope of Colima’s Volcano of Fire. In 1985 I invited my Rotary buddies to accompany me to throw a Fiesta for these children, and we invited the Colima Rotarians to help us. The “service” bug caught us all in its grips and my life has not been the same since.

I’m a Rotarian because I have led a charmed life and it’s a great way to share the “charm” and give back. I’m a Rotarian because I believe our world will be a safer and saner place when more of us visit other countries, live with another language and culture, and come home with a sense of awe and wonder for what we’ve learned. And I’m a Rotarian because it is the service organization on the ground everywhere combating the plagues that lead to war: poverty, hunger and lack of shelter.

I joined Rotary to gain fellowship with my community. Now I enjoy the fellowship of the world.
