Why I am a Rotarian.....

It isn't a secret, or a process, or one solution to a problem. Instead, there are a thousand or maybe a million different reasons Why I am a Rotarian It's sorta like a jigsaw puzzle, when the pieces all come together. I remember noticing the folks that belonged to the "Rotary Club of Cadiz".  Although I was fairly new to the community,  I knew most of them. They were my friends. They stood out in the community, the go to people if you wanted something done, the bankers, grocery store owners the insurance agent,  lawyers, judges, doctors, CEO's and my best friend who always seemed to get called for duty in the ER on Monday nights and yet made time on Tuesday for her  Rotary meeting.

"Why don't you just go home?" I would ask and always the same answer, "I've made a commitment to be there on Tuesday, I can't miss.” I can't imagine working almost 36 hours straight, and then going to a meeting. Can you? Still, I was inspired by this woman's stamina, her enthusiasm, her joy, and her selfless service. Accepting her invitation to attend a Rotary meeting came naturally for me. I was impressed with what came out of those meetings -a small group of community leaders doing so much, Scholarships, Grants, community service projects, fighting illiteracy and hunger through International projects like eradicating Polio, and sponsoring Clean Water projects. I wanted to be part of that  group of dedicated leaders, all with the same mind set, Service Above Self.  I was inspired to become a Rotarian. Inspired not just by hearing their words, but by seeing their actions and feeling the sincerity of their words. In the ten years since that time, my life has changed dramatically. I won’t go into details here (although we could have coffee sometime). But I can say that being a Rotarian has taken me places geographically, relationally, and spiritually, that I never would have been able to experience without being part of this great service organization.  I wouldn’t trade the last ten years for anything in the world.  And every once in a while, when I remember Why I am a Rotarian, I have a hard time thinking about what I would have missed if I’d chosen not to go with my friend to her Rotary meeting.
