A question often asked of a Rotarian seems to be superfluous. I am inclined to ask those who are qualified to be Rotarians but are not yet members of a Rotary Club – “Why are you not a Rotarian?”

What attracts a person to Rotary can not be answered in a few words, sentences or even paragraphs.

I am a Rotarian because I was charmed by the Rotary and I continue to be charmed because Rotary unfolds its charms slowly but surely.

Firstly, the philosophy of Rotary is without doubt so touching, so practical, so stunning that it is impossible not be attracted by Rotary. The philosophy of being helpful to the needy, showing compassion to the depressed, to bring smiles of the teary faces is undoubtedly divine. The pleasure of giving birth to pleasure on other’s faces is in all the books of all religions. Rotary, therefore is a religion to me.

Secondly, the twin attributes of fellowship and service provide a sense of fulfillment and contentment. Rotary has given me such valuable friends from all walks of life that were it not for Rotary, I would be a lonely man. Rotary gives life long friends, compassionate friends, reliable friends – Yes!! True friends. My life is never overburdened by friends. True friends are as rare as a three leaf clover.

Thirdly, I have been lucky to be a Rotarians because Rotary is one such organization that has global roots and gives us a unique opportunity to interact with people across the globe. When major issues of a global nature need attention, Rotary is one such organization that is present almost all over the world. Massive programmes related to health, environment and Peace cannot be solved by the local communities. Rotary gives us that opportunity to be a part of global project. Polio eradication programme is one programme that is on the brink of success. It is because of the reputation of Rotary and financial support of The Rotary Foundation that Governments and world health bodies are a part of Polio eradication programme.

Fourthly, Rotary’s Service programmes give me satisfaction and happiness. I could personally render service to some and obtain pleasure but when I join hands with like minded Rotarians, the pleasure is multiplied, and the benefits to communities increased manifold and its effectiveness more pervasive.

I want to bring home all that if I have helped Rotary carryout its objectives of service, I have gained so much from Rotary. I have become richer – not in material matters but in friends, in good qualities, in leadership skills, in oratory, in communication skills and in ethical facets of life. I have learnt humility, faith and commitment. I am a better PERSON because of Rotary.

I am truly convinced that what I have gained from Rotary is much more than what I gave to Rotary. That is the reason why I ask “Why NOT Rotary?”

With personal regards,

ASHOK MAHAJAN, TRUSTEE – THE ROTARY FOUNDATION (2009-13), DIRECTOR- ROTARY INTERNATIONAL (2007-09)
