The INTERNATIONAL INNER WHEEL
in ENGLAND

History of IIW in   Clubs   Districts

 History
A detailed history of International Inner Wheel can be seen here. This page is dedicated to general history of Inner Wheel in England, its districts and clubs.

 Districts
There are, at 2010,  29 Districts In Great Britain and Ireland with just over 23,000 members. With 3 Districts covering Scotland, 2 covering Wales and 1 for the whole of Ireland, the remaining 23 Districts are allocated to England, the Irish Sea the Channel islands, the latter of which are included in District 11.

District 5 is where it all started - Manchester. In 1947 however, with the increase in clubs, District 5 gave some of its clubs to the new District 28. In 1987 other new clubs forced the creation of District 128. IWC Manchester remains in District 5.
District 7 covers a wide area of the East Midlands. We currently have 46 clubs with a total of 1,160 members.
District 8 extends over a large part of East Anglia and includes the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk and parts of Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Essex. In all there are nearly 700 members in 26 clubs.
District 10 was created in 1932 with 4 clubs from Bristol, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Weston Super Mare. In 1971 the district was divided and District 20 was created from 21 clubs in D10 and several from D11 and D17. 5 clubs from D6 joined the remaining 21 clubs in D10.
District 12 includes Kent, East Sussex and South East London.
District 13 is centred on London. It's history is directly linked to the Founder of Inner Wheel, Mrs Oliver Golding -
On 30 June1931, Mrs Golding addressed a meeting at Wimbledon on the formation of District committees. Members from Brixton, Clapham, Hackney and Kensington were present. In January 1932 at Carpenter's Restaurant in Clapham, Mrs Golding again spoke to Club Members. At this meeting it was decided that Districts 13 & 14 should be created. No. 13 District Committee was formed on 7 April 1932 at the home of Mrs W A Shakerly, 8 Elms Road, Clapham, South London. There were ten members present from the five founder clubs. Brixton - Mrs Conyers & Mrs D Young Clapham - Mrs W A Shakerley & Mrs W Bonney Hackney - Mrs C Fisher Yates & Mrs W R Rendall Kensington - Mrs A Anderson & Mrs S G Crimes Putney - Mrs Gordon Bradley & Mrs E Gower Mrs W A Shakerley was unanimously elected Chairman of the District, Mrs Anderson Vice Chairman and Mrs Rendall Hon. Secretary/Treasurer.
District 127 was created in 1985 and covers South Yorkshire, Humberside and most of Lincolnshire. The district resulted from transfers from D4 and D22 when those districts became too large to administer.
 Clubs
The home of Inner Wheel and the first club in England and the world, is well known to be the IWC Manchester.
As histories are received, we will add here the oldest 3 clubs in each district.
