Districts History

As at July 2011 there are 6 zones in the United States, 5 Districts and 49 Clubs.

Chicago
Just as today's Rotary International began as an idea and evolved with name changes and administrative procedures, the International Inner Wheel (IIW) evolved in time, from more humble beginnings and via obstacle filled paths.
To follow that path, visit our "Timeline".
It must be acknowledged that inevitably, the first real IIW club was formed in Chicago, as an auxiliary to the Chicago Rotary Club under the name "Women of Rotary". This name was registered in the U.S. state of Illinois on 22 May 1923, but under directives from Rotary International, the name was not allowed to be used and instead, approval was given for "The Women of the Rotary Club of Chicago".

Being a ladies only club, it could be recognised as the ancestor of the IIW.
Very little information exists about this first club other than a record in the above Timeline that "Mrs. Alwilda F. Harvey, wife of the then Chicago Rotary Club president, stepped into a leadership that brought fifty-nine Rotary wives together at a luncheon in the "Sherman House" (Chicago).
References are also made to these early days, prior to the formation of the first "Inner Wheel" club, in the book by Luisa Vinciguerra.

The club no longer exists.
