PATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 1

Paternal Great Grandparents of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

Her father John’s ancestors can be traced back to his grandparents (being Jean’s paternal great grandparents) John Thomson (P1) and Jane Moir (P1).

Their dates and places of birth, marriage and death have not yet been traced.

They were probably married about 1800 in the Parish of Inverkeillor, Forfarshire (which later became the County of Angus).

They had two known children, Jean Thomson (P2), born about 1804, and David Thomson (P2), born about 1813, both of whom were born in the Parish of Inverkeillor, Forfarshire. Documentation recording their births has not been traced.

PATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 2

Children of Paternal Great Grandparents of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

(Child 1 of 2) Jean Thomson (P2)
(the great aunt of Jean Harris).
She was married to a male called (William?) Smith (P2), who was probably a Grocer and who possibly died on 1st July 1864 in Auchinblae, Parish of Fordoun, Kincardineshire (both items not yet proved).
Documentation relative to their marriage has not yet been proved.

It is not known where Jean Thomson and her husband resided prior to 3rd April1871 but sometime between 7th April 1861 and 3rd April 1871 she went to live with her
brother David, as his housekeeper, at 50 Inverury Street in the Village of Auchinblae, Parish of Fordoun, Kincardineshire (Notes 3 and 4) (probably indicating that her husband had died by that time). Jean still lived with her brother on 4th April 1881.

It is not known, at present, when or where Jean died but it was possibly between 1881 and 1891. It is not known whether she had any children although it seems unlikely.

Paternal Grandparents of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

(Child 2 of 2) David Thomson (P2)
(the grandfather of Jean Harris)
He was married to Mary Ferguson (P2), who was born in Logie Pert, Forfarshire (Note 5) about 28th June 1812. Mary’s parents were William Ferguson and Helen Stewart.

David and Mary were married at the Village of Logie Pert, Forfarshire on 10th December 1842.

Mary died at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Forfarshire (Note 5) on 31st October 1858 and is buried in the Churchyard at Marykirk, Logie Pert, Forfarshire (now Angus).

David died at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 21st January 1888.
Paternal Grandfather of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

David Thomson (P2)
David (Child 2 of 2 above) lived at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Forfarshire on 13th October 1843, 13th June 1845, 2nd May 1850 and 30th March 1851 at which later time he was referred to as a Linen Yarn Bleacher. David was referred to as a Bleachfield Labourer on the Death Certificate of his wife Mary on 31st October 1858.

He was referred to as a Grocer living at Barnside of Balmullo, Parish of Dun, County of Fife on 7th April 1861 and was a widower at that time .His housekeeper Ann Ferries resided with him at that time.
He was also referred to as a Grocer, residing at the Village of Auchinblae, Parish of Fordoun, Kincardineshire on 2nd April 1871. His sister Jean Smith (nee Thomson) (P2), who was his housekeeper, resided with him.
He was referred to as a Grocer (Master) on 20th June 1873, as a General Merchant on 28th June 1875 and as a Merchant on 4th April 1881, on all three dates residing at the Village of Auchinblae, Parish of Fordoun, Kincardineshire. His sister Jean (aka Jane) was still residing with him as his housekeeper on 4th April 1881.

He died on 21st January 1888 at 15 Cumberland Street, St Andrew, Edinburgh.

Paternal Grandmother of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

Mary Ferguson (P2)
Mary Ferguson was born in Logie Pert (Note 5), Forfarshire about 28th June 1812.

Her residences prior to her marriage on 10th December 1842 have not yet been established but are likely to have been in or near of Logie Pert, Forfarshire.
From 10th December 1842 until her death on 31st October 1858 she resided at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Forfarshire. She is buried in the Churchyard at Marykirk, Logie Pert, Forfarshire.

PATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3

Children of Jean Harris’ Paternal Grandparents David Thomson and Mary Ferguson.
That is, John, the father of Jean Harris (nee Thomson) and his brothers and sisters
(Jean Harris’ uncles and aunts)

Three children are known, as follows:

Child No. 1 of 3 - David Thomson (P3)
Born 13th October 1843 at Craigo Works Logie Pert, Angus.

He still resided there on 31st March 1851 at which time he was a Scholar.
On 7th April 1861 he was a boarder (lodger) residing at Boat Row, Logie Pert, Angus and was referred to as a Linen Bleacher.
On 2nd April 1871 he was unemployed and residing at the Village of Auchinblae, Fordoun, Kincardineshire.

He died at Railway Cottages, Dun, Forfarshire on 28th June 1875 at which time he
was a Railway Porter. He was unmarried.

Child No. 3 of 3 - Ann Thomson (P3)
Born 2nd May 1850 at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Angus.

She still resided there on 31st March 1851.
She was not located on the Census for 1861 (7th April 1861), which may indicate that she was in service or employment away from home at that time.
On 2nd April 1871 she was resident in the Village of Auchinblae, Fordoun, Kincardineshire at which time she was referred to as a Worker at a Flax Mill. She was unmarried at that time.

The date and place of her death have not yet been found.
It is believed that she was unmarried and had no children.

Child No. 2 of 3 - John Thomson (P3)
(the Father of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)).

Born 13th June 1845 at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Angus

On 31st March 1851 he was still residing at Craigo Works, Logie Pert, Angus at which time he was referred to as a Scholar, probably at Craigo School.

On 7th April 1861 he may have been a Cattleman (Servant) residing at Mill Road, Logie Pert, Angus (but this has not been absolutely confirmed).

He was not located on the 1871 Census (2nd April 1871).

On 20th June 1873, he married Anne Youngson (P3) at 26 Blackfriars Street, St Nicholas, Aberdeen at which time he as referred to as a Railway Pointsman, residing at 10 Prospect Terrace, Aberdeen. They were married according to the Forms of the Original Secession Church.

On 10th April 1874 he was referred to as a Railway Pointsman for the Caledonian Railway, residing at 9 Bank Street, Ferryhill, Aberdeen.
On 25th September 1875 he was referred to as a Railway Signalman, residing at 76 Holborn Street, Aberdeen.
On 29th July 1877 he was referred to as a Furniture Warehouseman, residing at 121 Rose Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.
On various dates between 23rd September 1879 and 8th November 1881 he was variously referred to as an Upholsterer’s Porter, a Furniture Warehouseman and a Furniture Packer, residing at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.
On various dates between 29th April 1883 and 3rd April 1886 he was referred to as a Furniture Packer, residing at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.
On 5th April 1891 and 28th April 1891 he was referred to as a Furniture Packer, residing at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.
On 31st March 1901 he was referred to as a Packer or Warehouseman, residing at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.






He travelled to the United States with his wife Annie (born Anne) and his daughter Joanna (P4) (aka Joey) on the Anchor Line ship SS California sailing to New York, USA from Glasgow, Scotland on 28th May 1910, with an ultimate destination of his son Alexander at 414 West 60th Street, Chicago, Illinois, USA, presumably to attend the marriage of his daughter Jean (aka Jane) to Paul Harris on 2nd July 1910. He is described as a Warehouseman on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest.

Paul and Jean Harris acquired their home at 10856 Longwood Drive, Morgan Park, Beverly Hills District of Chicago, USA, in 1912. Jean’s father, mother, brother James and sister Joanna lived only five blocks away from Jean and Paul.

John returned to Scotland where he died on 26th April 1938 at The Manse, Annbank, Tarbolton, Ayrshire, which was the home of his son John Youngson Thomson.


The Mother of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

was

Anne Youngson (P3)
Born 18th May 1851.in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

Referred to as a Scholar residing at 48 Skene Square, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861.

On 2nd April 1871 she was probably residing at 167 Union Street, Holborn, Old Machar, Aberdeen, where she was referred to as a Parlour Maid. This was a large house with seven servants.

Referred to as a Domestic Servant residing at 26 Blackfriars Street, District of St Nicholas, Aberdeen on 20th June 1873.

She married John Thomson (P3) at that address on the same day. They were married according to the Rites of the Original Secession Church.

After that time she resided with her husband John Thomson at various addresses as shown under John Thomson above and also travelled with him to USA on 28th May 1910 where she also resided with him.

She returned to Scotland and died on 28th February 1944 at The Old Manse, Annbank, Tarbolton, Ayrshire, the home of her son John Youngson Thomson.


PATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 1)
(Jean Harris (nee Thomson) and her brothers and sisters)

There were eight children of John Thomson and Anne Youngson (Parents of Jean Harris (nee Thomson) as follows:




(1 of 8) Ann Moir Thomson (M4/P4)
Born 10th April 1874 at 9 Bank Street, Ferryhill, Aberdeen.

On 4th April 1881 she was referred to as a Scholar, residing at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.
On 5th April 1891 she was referred to as a Dressmaker, residing at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.
On 31st March 1901 she was referred to as a Dressmaker residing at 44 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.

She travelled to Canada at the same time as her brother James Hay Thomson on the Allan Line Royal Steamers and State Line ship SS Corinthian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 27th October 1906. Her destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada. No occupation is stated on the Manifest.

She probably died in either Canada or USA. It is likely that she was unmarried.

Died of scarletina (scarlet fever) on 6th November 1880 at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh

(3 of 8) John Youngson Thomson (M4/P4)
Born 29th July 1877 at 121 Rose Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh
On 4th April 1881 he resided at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

His early schooling was at Canonmills Primary School, Rodney Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian.

On 20th September 1887 he resided at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.
He attended James Gillespies School, Gillespie Crescent, Edinburgh from 20th September 1887 until 11th July 1890. This was a fee-paying school for boys and girls and was managed by Edinburgh School Board.

It is interesting to note that the eminent authoress Dame Muriel Spark later attended James Gillespies High School for Girls. In her most famous novel “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”, she used the School as the model for the Marcia Blaine School of the novel and one of the teachers Miss Christina Kay was the inspiration for Miss Jean Brodie. Dame Muriel died in April 2006.

On 5th April 1891 John was referred to as an Apprentice Clothier, resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

On 31st March 1901 he was referred to as a Law Clerk, resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.
He was further educated at the University of Edinburgh and qualified as a Solicitor in October 1905.



He travelled to Canada at the same time as his brother Alexander Thomson on the Allan Line Steamship Co’ ship SS Grampian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 17th September 1909. His destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada. His occupation is shown thereon
as a Solicitor.

He moved to Chicago, USA and studied at McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, USA, from 1910 to 1913.
He was Licensed by The Presbytery of Chicago on 21st April 1913 and was Ordained as a Minister of the Presbyterian Church of America on 30th April 1913.
He was admitted as Minister of Elder Memorial Presbyterian Church, Leith, Scotland,
on 19th February 1914.
He then transferred to Greenock (South) Church, Scotland on 22nd June 1920
and then to Annbank Old Church, Tarbolton, Ayrshire on 3rd May 1931.

He acted as Chaplain to the Lord High Commissioner at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland held in Edinburgh in May 1931.
The Lord High Commissioner was the former well known Member of Parliament, James Brown, who was born and lived in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, where John Youngson Thomson had his Ministry at Annbank Parish Church.
On his visit to Scotland in 1934, Paul Harris (who was the brother in law of John Youngson Thomson) whilst visiting John took dinner with “that very unusual character, Honourable James Brown, M.P.” Paul was very impressed with Mr Brown and appears to have been presented with a photograph of “Their Graces House Party and Suite” taken at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1931, the photograph being still displayed at Rotary International Headquarters in Evanston, Chicago, USA.

From 3rd May 1931, John resided at The Manse, Annbank, Tarbolton, Ayrshire.
He retired on 1st April 1957 and died on 26th December 1966 at 1 Glen Lochart Road, Edinburgh (A Nursing Home). His usual residence at that time was 6 Comely Bank Road, Edinburgh where he had resided with his brother James Hay Thomson and his sister Jean.

He was unmarried.

(4 of 8) Alexander Thomson (M4/P4)
Born 23rd September 1879 at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

Resided at 9 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 4th April 1881.
Referred to as a Scholar, resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891. He was not located on the 1901 Census

He travelled to Canada at the same time as his brother John Youngson Thomson on the Allan Line Steamship Co’ ship SS Grampian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 17th September 1909. His destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada. His occupation is shown thereon
as a Salesman. He is recorded as being unmarried at that time.

On 28th May 1910 he resided at 414 West 60th St. Chicago, Illinois, USA.

He probably died in USA or Canada and was probably still unmarried.

(6 of 8) James Hay Thomson (M4/P4)
Born 29th April 1883 at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

Referred to as a Scholar, resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891.
Referred to as an Apprentice Upholsterer, resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.

He travelled to Canada at the same time as his sister Ann (aka Annie) MoirThomson on the Allan Line Royal Mail Steamers and State Line ship SS Corinithian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 27th October 1906. His destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada and his occupation is shown thereon as an Upholsterer.

It has been reported by a family member that James (Jim), who was a qualified engineer, joined the Ford Motor Company when he moved to USA, probably from Canada and that he stayed with Ford until his retirement. This has not been confirmed.

During a period in Chicago James, his sister Joanna and his mother and father lived about five blocks from his sister Jean and her husband Paul Harris, who, from about 1912 resided at “Comely Bank”, 10856 Longwood Drive, Morgan Park, Beverly Hills District of Chicago.

He is believed to have returned to Scotland with his sister Jane (aka Jean) Harris in 1955.

Referred to as being of Independent Means on his Death Certificate on 27th June 1970. His usual residence was 6 Comely Bank Road, St Bernards, Edinburgh where he had resided with his brother John Youngson Thomson.

He was unmarried and is buried with his sister Jean in Newington Cemetery, Edinburgh.

Born 3rd April 1886 at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

Referred to as a Scholar on 5th April 1891 resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh.

Referred to as an Apprentice Dressmaker on 31st March 1901 resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.

She may never have had a career and was probably “the daughter at home helping her mother.”

She travelled to Canada at the same time as her sister Jane (aka Jean) Thomson on the Allan Line Royal Mail Steamers and State Line ship SS Corinithian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 29th June 1907. Her destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada. Her occupation is shown thereon as a Housekeeper. She was shown as being unmarried at that time.
She is believed to have moved to Canada and then to USA and later returned to Scotland.
She is mentioned as having been with sister Jean on the Beverly Hills Ramble with the Chicago Prairie Club (when Paul tore the sleeve of his Tweed Jacket) in 1910.

On the retirement of her brother James Hay Thomson, he and Mary set up house together in Edinburgh.

On her death in Edinburgh on 1st April 1977 she was unmarried.

Born 28th April 1891 at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh

Referred to as a Scholar on 31st March 1901, resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh.

She travelled to the USA on 28th May1910 along with her father John and mother Annie, probably to attend the wedding of her sister Jean to Paul Harris in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 2nd July 1910. They travelled on the Anchor Line ship SS California headed for the destination Port of New York. They left Glasgow, Scotland on 28th May 1910. Her final destination is shown as Chicago, USA and it is stated that she was going to her brother Alexander at 414 West 60th Street, Chicago, Illinois. She is referred to as Joy (probably due to bad handwriting) on the Passenger Manifest and her occupation is shown as a Stenographer.

Joanna’s sister Jean and her husband Paul Harris resided at “Comely Bank”, 10856 Longwood Drive, Morgan Park, Beverly Hills District of Chicago, USA from about 1912 until Paul’s death on 27th January 1947. Joanna, her father and mother and brother James lived only five blocks away from Jean and Paul.

Joanna returned to Scotland and was referred to as a Bank Teller on her marriage on 24th September 1925 to Rev John Howe (P4) of Coronary Manse, Baillieborough, County Gavan, Ulster, Ireland. John was a Minister of the Original Secession Church of Scotland.

John was born in Paisley, near Glasgow, on 31st October 1891 and educated at Camphill School, Paisley (so called as it had been built on the site of an ancient Roman Camp) from 1897 to 1907 and at Glasgow University - MA 1913-1915 and 1919-1921
He saw war service with the Seaforth Highlanders in France 1915-1918.

He was Licensed by Glasgow United Original Secession Presbytery in 1921 and
Ordained and Inducted to Coronary, County Cavan, Ulster, Northern Ireland
(United Original Secession Presbytery of Ayr) on 24th February 1921.
He was transferred to Dundee Euclid Crescent United Original Secession Church on 21st October 1926.
On their trip to Scotland in 1934, Paul and Jean Harris met Joanna and John on several occasions. Paul seems to have had a high regard for them.
John retired on 31st October 1967 and died on 29th December 1974.

Joanna and John married at the Maitland Hotel, Shandwick Place, Edinburgh, when. her usual place of residence was The Neuk, 46 Denholm Street, Greenock.

At the time of Joanna’s death in Dundee on 24th April 1971, John and Joanna resided at 3 Adelaide Terrace, Dundee

John died at Alness, County of Ross and Cromarty on 29th December 1974.


PATERNAL LINE – GENERATIONS 5 (Section 1), 6 and 7

Joanna and John had two children (nephews of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)) as follows:

(Child 1 of 2) Andrew Youngson Howe (P5)
Born on 4th March 1928 at 3 Adelaide Terrace, Dundee.

He was educated at Dundee 1933-1944 and at St Andrews University 1956-1957.
He saw war service in Palestine attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Royal Ordinance Corps.
He was a Student Assistant at Dundee St Davids 1955-1956.
He was Licensed by the Presbytery of Dundee on 9th April 1957 and Ordained and Inducted to the charge of Farr, Bettyhill, By Thurso, Sutherland on 11th September 1957. He became Minister of a united charge combined with Altnaharra, Sutherland on 27th January 1969 and was transferred to Rosskeen, Alness, County of Ross & Cromarty on 23rd April 1969.

He married Dorothy Allison Thomson (P5) (Born on 10th October 1933 of parents John Malcolm Thomson and Sarah Mary Bell) of 9 Nesbitt Street, Dundee on 27th August 1957 at Ward Road Baptist Church, Dundee, according to the Forms of the Baptist Church. At that date he was still residing at 3 Adelaide Terrace, Dundee.

Andrew and Dorothy resided at the Manse of Farr, Bettyhill, By Thurso, Sutherland on 4th October 1964 and on 25th February 1967. They resided at Rosskeen Manse, Alness on 16th April 1970, 29th December 1974 and 7th September 1988.

Dorothy died on 9th September 1988 at Rosskeen Manse, Alness, County of
Ross & Cromarty.

Andrew died in Hospital at Inverness on 15th June 2004 his usual residence at the time being Bredon Cottage, 2 Springfield Terrace, Alness, County of Ross & Cromarty. He had retired from the Ministry on 31st December 1989 on the ground of ill health.

Andrew and Dorothy had three children, who in turn had at least four children (grandchildren of Andrew and Dorothy) and (Two grandnieces and a grandnephew of Jean (aka Jane) Thomson Harris).

Died in Royal Infirmary, Dundee (Usual residence 3 Adelaide Terrace, Dundee) on 12th July 1956.

He was unmarried.

Referred to as a Scholar resident at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891.
Referred to as a Dressmaker resident at 41 Comely Bank Avenue, St Bernards, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.

She travelled to Canada at the same time as her sister Mary Ferguson Thomson on the Allan Line Royal Mail Steamers and State Line ship SS Corinithian bound for Montreal, Canada. They sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 29th June 1907. Her destination is listed on the Ship’s Passenger Manifest as Montreal, Canada and onward to Glencoe, Toronto, Canada. Her occupation is shown thereon as a Housekeeper and she was she was shown as being unmarried at that time. She was referred to on the Manifest as Jane.







A relative has reported that she was a Primary School Teacher although this has not been firmly established.

She married Paul Percy Harris (P4) in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 2nd July 1910.
They had no children.

From 1912 Jean and Paul resided at 10856 Longwood Drive, Morgan Park, Beverly Hills District of Chicago, USA, affectionately called “Comely Bank” after the area of Edinburgh where Jean spent some of the days of her childhood and youth. In Chicago, her father, mother, brother James and sister Joanna lived only five blocks away.

Paul died in Chicago on 27th January 1947.

Past District Governor Basil Lewis, in his publication “Paul Harris in Britain”, states that Jean remained in Chicago until 1955 but then, like her parents before her, she returned to Scotland to stay initially with her two brothers (John Youngson Thomson and James Hay Thomson) and sister (Mary Ferguson Thomson) at (John’s home at the Manse), Annbank and later with her sister Joey (Joanna) in Dundee" *

She entered a nursing home at 19 Great King Street, Edinburgh in October 1963 where she died on 9th November 1963. Her usual place of residence was 28 Mansfield Gardens, Edinburgh.

She is buried in Newington Cemetery, Edinburgh.

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 1
Maternal Great Grandparents and their descendants

The Maternal Great Grandparents were Alexander Moir (M1) and Ann Lawrence (M1) whose places and dates or birth and death are not at present known.

They were married at Brechin, Angus on 7th December 1814.

Alexander was referred to as an Overseer at Rubislaw Bleachfield, Aberdeen on 5th December 1845, as a Woolens’ Manufacturer on the Death Certificate of his son James on 20th April 1881 and as a Bleacher (deceased) on the Death Certificate of his daughter Ann on 29th December 1888.

Alexander and Ann are known to have had at least three children as follows:

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 2 (Section 1)

Child 2 of 3 - James Moir (M2)
A Great Uncle of Jean Harris (nee Thomson)

Born about 1820 in Brechin, Forfarshire (later Angus).

He married Catherine Kemlo (M2) in Aberdeen, on 5th December 1845. They were married in accordance with the Forms of the Original Secession Church.

Catherine was born in Stonehaven, Fetteresso, Kincardineshire about 1828 and died at Millden House, Cults, East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire on 23rd February 1903.

During all of her married life Catherine resided with James at the addresses shown for James hereunder.

James died at Holborn Place, Aberdeen on 20th April 1881.

Catherine resided at 46 Broad Street, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire on 5th April 1891 and at Milden House, Cults, East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire on 31st March 1901, where she resided with her daughter Rachel Jackson Gorrod (nee Moir) and her son-in-law William Wade Gordon Gorrod and their family.

James was referred to as a Mill Overseer residing in Aberdeen on his marriage on 5th December 1845.
He was referred to as a Grocer residing at No 7 Donalds Court, 20 Schoolhills, Parish of West, Aberdeen, on 31st March 1851. Alexander Moir (M2), the brother of James, who was referred to as a General Servant, was also residing with them at that time.
He was referred to as a Grocer residing at 24 Belmont Street, Aberdeen on 28th September 1856.
He was referred to as a Tea Merchant residing at 49 Upper Hardgate, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861.
He was referred to as a Grocer (Master) residing at 7 Blacks Buildings, Aberdeen on 6th August 1861
He was referred to as an Insurance Agent on 24th September 1866 and 6th February 1867.
He was referred to as an Insurance Agent and Tea Dealer residing at 2 Holburn Place, Old Machar Aberdeen, on 2nd April 1871.
He was referred to as an Insurance Agent and Tea Merchant residing at Prospect Cottage, Holburn Road, Old Machar Aberdeen, on 4th April 1881.
He was referred to as an Insurance Agent, residing at Holburn Place, Aberdeen on his death on 20th April 1881.

Subsequent to his death on 20th April 1881, on Certificates relating to his family, he was variously referred to as an Insurance Agent, an Insurance Superintendent and an Insurance Broker, but these would be descriptions provided by the members of his family and may not be entirely accurate.

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3 (Section 1)

Children of James Moir (M2) and Catherine Moir (nee Kemlo) M2

They are known to have had at least the following seven children, who were first cousins once removed of Jane (aka Jean) Harris (nee Thomson) (P4)

Child 1 of 7. Mary Kemlo Moir (M3)
Born 3rd January 1847 in Woodside, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire

She married George Cruickshank (Born about 1842 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen) at Cuperston (aka Cooperston) Place, Aberdeen on 6th February 1867 in accordance with the Rites of the Original Secession Church.
George was referred to as a Rope and Twine Manufacturer, residing at Mount Pleasant, Canal Street, Aberdeen, at that time.

George was referred to as a General Draper (Master) on 24th July 1869 and 4th February 1871, as a Draper on 2nd April 1871, as a Drapers Assistant on 18th October 1873 and 4th October 1877, as a Master Draper (employing 3 men and 4 women) on 4th April 1881, as a Commission Agent on 13th February 1890 and 5th April 1891, as a Commission Agent on own Account on 31st March 1901, as a Commission Agent on 1st July 1904 and 21st December 1904 and as a Commercial Traveller (Retired) on his death at 69 Seaview Terrace, Portobello on 13th July 1912.

After their marriage Mary and George resided at 4 Caledonia Place, Holborn, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 2nd April 1871 (with George’s father), at 29 Ashley Road, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 4th April 1881, at 302 Great Western Road, Aberdeen on 5th April 1891 and at 374 Great Western Road, Aberdeen on 31st March 1901.

Mary Kemlo Cruickshank (nee Moir) died between 31st March 1901 and 1905.

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 1)

Mary Kemlo Cruickshank (nee Moir) and George Cruickshank are known to have had at least four children who were all born in Aberdeen as follows:

Child 2 of 4. James Cruickshank (M4) Born 4th February 1871
Child 3 of 4. George Cruickshank (M4) Born 18th October 1873

These are second cousins of Jane (aka Jean) Harris (nee Thomson)
A few details of the above children are as follows:

Child 1of 4. Alexander Brown Cruickshank was married to Elizabeth Park (M4) (Born in Cairns of Memsie, Aberdeenshire on 22nd February 1876) at 29 Bridge Street, Bishopmill, Elgin on 21st December 1904. At that time he resided at 33 Grosvenor Road, Ilford, Essex, England and was referred to as a Medical Practitioner. Elizabeth resided at 18 The Square, Rosehearty, Near Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.

Elizabeth died in Elgin, Aberdeenshire on 27th January 1956. Alexander Brown Cruickshank predeceased her.

Child 2 of 4. James Cruickshank, who was an Apprentice Civil Engineer, died aged 19 on 13th February 1890. He was unmarried.

Child 3 of 4. The last known address of George Cruickshank, who had been a Bank Clerk, was 2 Britannia Road, Westcliffe-on-Sea, Essex, England.
He died after 13th July 1912.

Child 4 of 4. John Moir Cruickshank was married to Mary Jane Crawford (M4) (born about 1877) (residing at 49 St Swithins Street, Aberdeen) on 1st July 1904 at which time he resided at 374 Great Western Road, Aberdeen and was referred to as a Civil Engineer.
He died at 41 Drummond Place, Edinburgh (Usual residence 72 Belgrave Road, Edinburgh) on 4th August 1961. He wife predeceased him.

Child 3 of 7. Ann Moir (M3)
Born in Aberdeen on 12th September 1850.

She married Alexander Fullerton (M3) (born in Aberdeen on 4th May 1851) at 8 North Silver Street, Aberdeen on 20th July 1882 according to the Rites of the Free Church. He was a Drapers Assistant at the time and was later referred to as a Draper. He resided at 3 Crimon Place, Old Machar, Aberdeen at the time of his marriage.

Alexander and Ann continued to live at 3 Crimon Place on their marriage. They are shown as residing at 79 Southell Road, Ferryhill, Aberdeen on 31st March 1901 and at 6 Manor Place, Cults, East Peterculter on 27th November 1921.

Alexander died in Aberdeen on 27th November 1921 and Ann died at 6 Manor Place, Cults, East Peterculter on 12th January 1926.

Ann resided at No.7 McDonalds Court, 20 Schoolhills, Aberdeen on 31st March 1851.
She was referred to as a Scholar residing at 49 Upper Hardgate, Aberdeen on 7th April1861.
She resided at 2 Holborn Place, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 2nd April 1871.
She was described as being “at home” residing at Propect Cottage, Holborn Place, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 4th April 1881.
She resided at 8 North Silver Street, Aberdeen at her marriage on 20th July 1882.
Thereafter she resided with her husband Alexander at the addresses shown above.

MATERNAL LINE - GENERATION 4 (Section 2)

Ann and Alexander had at least one child Mary Fowler Fullerton (M4) who was born on 7th June 1886 and who died two days later on 9th June 1886.

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3 (Section 3)

Child 4 of 7. Catherine Kinloch Moir (M3)
Born in Aberdeen on 23rd August 1852.

Referred to as a Scholar residing at 49 Upper Hardgate, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861.
She resided at 2 Holborn Place, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 2nd April 1871.
She resided at Prospect Cottage, Holborn Place, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 4th April1881.

She was married to James Morgan (M3), an Australian Journalist, at a date and place unknown but before 27th May 1906 and probably abroad. She was not traced in either of the 1891 or 1901 Censuses and may have been abroad at that time. .

She died at Milden House, Cults, East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire on 27th May 1906.
It is not known whether Catherine and James had any children.

Child 5 of 7. Christian Webster Moir (M3) (a female)
Born at 24 Belmont Street, Aberdeen on 28th September 1856.

She resided at 49 Upper Hardgate, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861.
She was referred to as a Scholar residing at 2 Holburn Place, Old Machar, Aberdeen, on 2nd April 1871.
She was described as being “At home” residing at Prospect Cottage, Holburn Place, Old Machar Aberdeen, on 4th April 1881.

She died at Kepplestone Nursing Home, Aberdeen on 31st October 1931, her usual residence at the time being 33 Smith’s Road, Selborne, East London, South Africa

She married James Smith (M3), at 8 North Silver Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 26th April 1883. At that time he resided at 48 Claremont Street, Aberdeen and was referred to as a Seaman (Second Officer). On the birth of his son Albert Argo on 29th December 1890 he is referred to as a Ships Master with the Merchant Navy.

The dates and places of his birth and death (probably abroad) are not at present known.

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 3)

Christian and James had at least two children as follows:

· Albert Argo Smith (M4) Born 29th December 1890


Both children were born in Aberdeen and resided with their mother at 6 Holborn
Road, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 5th April 1891. They have not been traced in the
1901 Census (31st March 1901) and it is probable that they were abroad at that
time.

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3 (Section 4)

Child 6 of 7. John McKay Moir (M3)
Born 6th August 1861 at 7 Black’s Buildings, Aberdeen
Died at 63 West Graham Street, Glasgow on 9th June 1935

Married to Annie Sophia Allardyce (M3) at Billevue, Parish of Peterculter, Aberdeenshire, on 15th August 1888 according to the Rites of the Free Church of Scotland. Annie Sophia was born on 8th March 1865 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.

She died at 63 West Graham Street, Glasgow on 21st October 1930.

John was referred to as a Scholar residing at 2 Holburn Place, Old Machar, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire on 2nd April 1871.

He was referred to as “A Student in Arts at Aberdeen University” residing at Prospect Cottage, Holburn Place, Old Machar Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire on 4th April 1881.

He was referred to as an Insurance Agent (which was also the profession of his father) residing at 15 Mount Street, Aberdeen on his marriage on 15th August 1888 and also on the birth of his daughter Catherine Kemlo Moir on 4th October 1890.

The family was not traced on the Census for 1891 (5th April 1991)

On the birth of his daughter Margaret Gage Moir on 22nd August 1899 John was referred to as a Fishmonger. He was also referred to as a Fishmonger resident at 32 Queen Margaret Drive, Kelvinside, Glasgow, on 31st March 1901.

He was referred to as an Insurance Broker residing at 63 West Graham Street, Glasgow at his death on 10th June 1935.






MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 4)

John and Annie are known to have had at least five children as follows:

Dora Moir (M4) Born about 1892
James Moir (M4) Born about 1896
Margaret Gage Moir (M4) Born 22nd August 1899

Catherine was born in Aberdeen and Margaret in Glasgow. It has not yet been confirmed where Ann, Dora and James were born but it may have been abroad, perhaps in South Africa.
No marriage or death has been found for either Catherine or Margaret.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3 (Section 5)

Child 7 of 7. Rachel Jackson Moir (M3)
Born on 24th September 1866.in Cuparston, Aberdeen.

Married to William Wade Gordon Gorrod (M3) in Walthamstow, Essex, England on 23rd December 1890.

William was born at 18 Upper Denburn, Aberdeen on 18th July 1866. He resided at Elm Cottage, Mount Street, Aberdeen on 2nd April 1871 and at 27, 1/2 Mount Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 4th April 1881 at which time he was referred to as a Clerk (Apprentice Lawyer).
He was thereafter referred to as a Grain Merchant who resided at 12 Holborn Road, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 5th April 1891 and 30th October 1891. He was also referred to as a Grain Merchant when he resided at 60 Stanley Road, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 10th September 1893 and at Milden House, Cults, East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire on 31st March 1901. On that later date his mother-in-law. Catherine Kemlo Moir was also resident thereat.

William died at 4 St John’s Terrace, Aberdeen on 26th August 1940.

Rachel resided at 2 Holburn Place, Old Machar, Aberdeen, on 2nd April 1871.
She was referred to as a Scholar residing at Prospect Cottage, Holburn Place, Old Machar Aberdeen on 4th April 1881.
After her marriage on 23rd December 1890 she resided with her husband at the addresses shown above.

Rachel died at the age of 93 in Aberdeen on 8th November 1959.







MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 5)

Rachel and William had two known children as follows:

(Child 1) William Gordon Gorrod (M4)
He was a second cousin to Jean Harris (nee Thomson). .

Born 30th October 1891.at 12 Holburn Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen.

Until sometime before 29th September 1917 he resided with his parents at the addresses shown under William Wade Gordon Gorrod above.
On 29th September 1917 and 8th March 1918 he resided at Gordindale, Cults, East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire at which later time he was referred to as a Captain in the Royal Field Artillery and a Grain Merchant.

He married Lilias Alda Aytoun Young (M4) at Clunie Church, Clunie, Perthshire, on 8th March 1918, where her father was probably the Minister.

The dates and places of death of William and Lilias have not at present been established.

This line has not been examined much further.

(Child 2) Mary Kemlo Cruickshank Gorrod (M4)
She was a second cousin to Jean Harris (nee Thomson).

Born 10th September 1893. at 60 Stanley Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen.

Until sometime before 29th September 1917 she resided with her parents at the addresses shown under William Wade Gordon Gorrod above.
On 29th September 1917 she resided at Gordindale, Cults, East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire.

She married James Hay Petrie (M4) at Cults Parish Church, East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire on 29th September 1917.

Mary died at 306 Great Western Road, Aberdeen on 15th September 1956.

James was born on at 56 Holborn Street, Aberdeen on 31st March 1891. He was referred to as a Drapers Assistant, residing at 104 Leadside Road, Rubislaw, Aberdeen on 31st March 1901

He was referred to as a Clerk in the Securities Department of the North of Scotland & Town and County Bank, Glasgow and as a 2nd Lieutenant Royal Field Artillery at the time of his Marriage on 29th September 1917. He resided at 7 Stanley Street, Aberdeen and was serving with HM Forces on Short Leave (Furlough).

He was referred to as Assistant to the Director of Education on the birth of his daughter Mary Patricia Petrie on 24th May 1923 at which time he resided at 3 St John’s Terrace, Mansfield, East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire

He was referred to as a Harbour Master Treasurer when his daughter Mary Patricia married on 4th November 1953.

When his wife died on 15th September 1956 he was referred to as General Manager and Treasurer of Aberdeen Harbour Commission and resided at 306 Great Western Road, Aberdeen.

He was referred to as Harbour Manager (retired), residing at 33 Craigton Terrace, Aberdeen, when he died on 6th April 1971.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 5 (Section 2)

Mary and James had at least one child, Mary Patricia Petrie (M 5), who was born in East Peterculter, Aberdeenshire on 24th May 1923. She married Douglas Stewart Brown (M5) (Born about 1908) in Aberdeen on 4th November 1953

This line has not been examined much further.

Born about 1821 in Brechin, Forfarshire (later Angus).

Resided with his sister Ann at No 7 Donalds Court, 20 Schoolhouse, Parish of West, Aberdeen on 31st March 1851, where he was referred to as a General Servant.

Resided with Brother in Law John Youngson (husband of Ann Moir) at 48 Skene Square, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861 when he was referred to as a Grocer.

His date and place of death have not yet been established

2nd April 1871 at 24 Blackfriars Street, Aberdeen.
4th April 1881 at Glanton Schoolhouse, Village of Powburn, Alnwick, Northumberland, England. Residing with daughter Isabella.

She died at 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 29th December 1888.

On 5th December 1845 she married John Youngson (M2) in the Original Secession Church in St Nicholas, Aberdeen.
John who was born about 22nd June 1817 in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire was the maternal grandfather of Jean Harris (nee Thomson).
At the time of his marriage John Youngson was a Shoemaker, resident in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. He remained a Shoemaker for the rest of his life.

He resided at the same addresses as his wife Ann Moir, above, but after her death on 29th December 1888 he appears to have moved from 15 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh to 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh...
He died at 33 Cumberland Street, District of St Andrew, Edinburgh on 17th August 1890.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3 (Section 6)

Children of Grandparents John Youngson and Ann Moir
That is, the mother of Jean Harris (nee Thomson) and her brothers and sisters

Seven children are known. as follows:

(Child 1) Jane Lawrance (or Lawrence) Youngson (M3)
Born 6th November 1847 at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

Resided at 20 Marischall Street, Peterhead and 48 Skene Square, Old Machar, Aberdeen, respectively on 30th March 1851, and 7th April 1861 when she was referred to as a Scholar and at 26 Blackfriars Street, Aberdeen at the time of her marriage on 30th August 1867.

She married David Rintoul Bain (M3) (Born at Alva, Stirlingshire about 1842) at 7 Blacks Buildings, Aberdeen on 30th August 1867 according to the Forms of the Original Secession Church.

Jane resided at 38 Whitehouse Street, Aberdeen on 9th August 1868, at 18 Nellfield Place, Aberdeen on 1st March 1870, at 5 Thistle Lane North, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 3rd April 1871, at 10 Rose Street, Edinburgh on 30th June 1871, at 90 Rose Street, Edinburgh on 2nd January 1874, at 6 Bread Street, Edinburgh on 25th September 1877, 28th December 1878, and 13th March 1880, at 39 North Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh on 4th April 1881, 14th September 1881, 6th July 1883 and 8th February 1887, at 12 Steels Place, Newington, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891 and at 22 Viewforth, Morningside, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.

She died in Deaconess Hospital, Cowgate, Edinburgh on 9th January 1911.

David was referred to as a Cabinet Maker at his marriage and subsequently as a Cabinet Maker (Journeyman), a Master Cabinet Maker, then as a Cabinet Maker Employer, then as a Cabinet Maker Upholsterer, and later as a Cabinet Maker and Joiner.

From his marriage on 30th August 1867 until the death of his wife on 9th January 1911, David resided with his wife at the addresses shown above.

David died aged 96 at 84 Marchmont Road, Morningside, Edinburgh, on 3rd November 1938


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 6)

Jane Lawrence Bain (nee Youngson) and David Rintoul Bain are known to have had at least ten children, first cousins of Jean Harris (nee Thomson). Some brief details of them are as follows:

1. Jane Lawrence Bain (M4)- Born 9th August 1868
Jane was referred to as a Furniture Shop-Keeper residing at 22 Viewforth,
Morningside, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.
She died in Edinburgh on 12th April 1931 at which time she was referred to as a Furniture Sales Woman (Retired). She was unmarried.
2. James Bain (M4)- Born 1st March 1870
James married Margaret McNaught (M4), a Domestic Servant, (Born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire on 27th November 1873) at Falkirk on 26th May 1896.

James was referred to as a Cabinet Maker, residing at 12 Steels Place,
Newington, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891, as a Cabinet Maker (Journeyman), residing at 82 Dunchattan Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow on 10th April 1900 and as a Cabinet Maker (Worker), residing, with his wife, at the same address on 31st March 1901.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 5 (Section 3)

They had at least two children (both born in Glasgow) as follows:

· Margaret Esther Lawrence Bain (M5) - Born 23rd January 1898
· Elizabeth McNaught Bain (M5) - Born 10th April 1900

This line has not been examined much further.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 7)

3. John Youngson Bain (M4)- Born 30th June 1871
John was referred to as a Cabinet Maker, residing at 12 Steels Place,
Newington, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891.
He was referred to as a Joiner, residing at 36 Guildford Street, London on 2nd August 1898.when he married Agnes Tait Falconer. She was referred to as a Dressmaker residing at 140 Buccleuch Street, Edinburgh at that time.

He died after 3rd November 1938



4. David Bain (M4)-Born 2nd January 1874
He was referred to as a Scholar, residing at 39 North Bruntsfield Place, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh on 4th April 1881.
He was referred to as a butcher, residing at 57 Leonards Place, Kinghorn, Leith, on 26th June 1895, when he married Wilhemina Scott (M4)

David was referred to as an Electrical Fitter when he died, from drowning in the River Irvine, Kilmarnock, on 17th December 1918

5. Isabella Catherine Bain (M4)-Born 25th September 1877

6. George Sturrock Bain (M4)- Born 28th December 1878
George was referred to as a Cabinet Maker, residing at 22 Viewforth,
Morningside, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901, as a Joiner (Journeyman), residing at Beechwood Cottage, East Wemyss on 28th February 1907. He was then referred to as a Cabinet Maker (Journeyman), residing at Seaview, Promenade, Leven on 4th November 1910.

He married Mary Bannerman McKenzie McLean (M4) at The Castle Hotel, Princes Street, Edinburgh on 28th February 1907. At that time she resided at 5 Downfield Place, Edinburgh.

George died in Leven on 17th March 1957.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 5 (Section 4)

George and Mary had at least one child, a son, Dudley Sturrock Bain (M5) who was born in Leven on 4th November 1910.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 8)

7. Christina Youngson Bain (M4)–Born 13th March 1880
Referred to as a Dressmaker, residing at 22 Viewforth, Morningside,
Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.

She married Leopold William James Clement (M4) at Edinburgh on 8th April 1912.

Leopold died on 24th April 1950 and Christina 0n 26th June 1952.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 5 (Section 5)

Died 12th October 1996
Child 2. Douglas Clement (M5)
Born 20th March 1926
Died 3rd August 1979

Further details of these two children and a further possible descendant are known.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 9)

8. Agnes Bain (M4)- Born 14th September 1881
Referred to as a Milliner, residing at 22 Viewforth, Morningside,
Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.
She was referred to as a Milliner and Sports Wear Outfitter on her death in Edinburgh on 21st November 1944. She was unmarried.

9. Catherine Youngson Bain (M4)- Born 6th July 1883
She died on 11th December 1908 at which time her residence was 22 Viewforth, Edinburgh. She was unmarried

10. Ethel Moir Bain (M4)- Born 8th February 1887
Referred to as a Typist (Retired) when she died on 29th January 1953, at which time her residence was 84 Marchmont Road, Edinburgh, She was unmarried.

The above ten children have not been dealt with in great detail herein. Jane and James were born in Aberdeen and the remainder were born in Edinburgh.


MATERNAL LINE - GENERATION 3 (Section 7)

(Child 2) Isabella Whyte Youngson (M3)
Born 11th May 1848 at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

She resided at 20 Marischall Street, Peterhead on 31st March 1851, was a visitor at Bins Cottage, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861 and resided at 10 Union Street, Aberdeen on 2nd April 1871, when she was referred to as a Nurse.

She married James Wood (M3), a Schoolmaster (born in Dalmellington, Ayrshire), at 15 Drumdryan Street, District of Saint Giles, Edinburgh on 26th December 1878. She was referred to as a Domestic Servant, residing at Gartsherrie Cottage, Coatbridge at that time. James resided in Whittingehame, Northumberland, England at that time

Both resided at Glanton Schoolhouse, Village of Powburn, Alnwick, Northumberland, England on 4th April 1881. Her parents also resided at this address. James was referred to as a Certified Teacher at that date and as a Public School Teacher on subsequent dates.

Isabella died at Ranish (Gaelic spelling Ranais), Lochs, Island of Lewis, County of Ross on 23rd February 1890.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 10)

Isabella and James are known to have had at least five children, all of whom were born at Glanton, as follows:

(Child 1) Ann Moir Jane Wood (M4) - Born 1881
(Child 2) John Youngson Wood (M4) - Born 1883
(Child 3) Mary Davidson Wood (M4) - Born 1885
(Child 4) Jean Wood (M4) - Born 1887
(Child 5) James Wood (M4) - Born 1888

These children have not been dealt with in detail herein.

James and his first five children all resided at Ranish (Gaelic spelling Ranais), Lochs, Island of Lewis, County of Ross on 5th April 1891.

After her death, James remarried at Alnwick, Northumberland, England, on 30th April 1891 to Annie Dodds, who had been born in England. Annie and her issue are not included in the Chart of the Descendants of Alexander Moir attached hereto.

They subsequently resided at Ranish (Gaelic spelling Ranais) School House, Isle of Lewis, District of Lochs, County of Ross, Scotland and then at East End. No 10 The Schoolhouses, Island of Iona

They had at least three children, all born at Lochs, Island of Lewis, County of Ross,
as follows:

Child No.1. Winifred Ada Wood - Born 16th April 1892
Child No.2. Elizabeth Mabel Wood - Born 31st May 1894
Child No.3. Charles Henry Wood - Born 6th March 1899

These children have not been dealt with in detail herein and, as they are not directly connected to Jean Harris (nee Thomson), are not shown in the Chart of the Descendants of Alexander Moir attached hereto.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3 (Section 8)

(Child 3) Alexander Youngson (M3)
Born About 1849 at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.
Resided at 20 Marischall Street, Peterhead and 48 Skene Square, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 31st March 1851 and 7th April 1861 respectively.

Referred to as a Scholar on 7th April 1861.

(Child 5) Catherine Kemlo Youngson (M3)
Born 26th December 1852 at 6 Minister Lane, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
She died at 48 Skene Square, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 24th February 1859 and is buried in Old Machar Churchyard, Aberdeen.
She was unmarried

(Child 6) John Youngson (M3)
Born 19th January 1855 at 6 Minster Lane, Old Machar, Aberdeen
Referred to as a Scholar residing at 48 Skene Square, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861.
Referred to as a Printer Compositor residing at 24 Blackfriars Street, Aberdeen on 2nd April 1871
Referred to as a Compositor residing at 15 Drumdryan Street, Edinburgh on 18th July 1878.

He married Mary Ann Borrie (M3), a Domestic Servant, at Denhead, Kirriemuir on 18th July 1878. Mary Ann was born about 1854 in Kirriemuir, Forfarshire (now Angus).

He was referred to as a Printer Compositor, residing at 10 Drumdryan Road, St Giles, Edinburgh on various dates between 4th April 1881and 7th July 1887.

He resided at 16 Panmure Place, Parish of George Square, Edinburgh on 17th August 1890.

He was referred to as a Foreman Printer Compositor residing at 16 Panmure Place, Parish of George Square, Edinburgh on various dates between 5th April 1891 and 31st March 1901. He was referred to as a Letterpress Printer on 18th July 1911 and subsequently as a Master Printer.

John died at 89 St Albans Road, Edinburgh on 22nd January 1930.

His wife, Mary Ann, died at the same address on 28th June 1948.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 11)

John and Mary Ann are known to have had at least four children, all born in Edinburgh, as follows:

Anne Moir Youngson (M4) -Born 19th June 1881
Jessie Borrie Youngson (M4) -Born 11th April 1883
Clementina McLachlan Youngson (M4) -Born 7th July 1887
Katherine Leighton Youngson (M4) -Born 7th November 1891

These four children have not been dealt with in detail herein but a few items of information are:

Anne Moir Youngson was referred to as a Pupil Teacher, resident at 16 Panmure Place, Parish of St George, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901 and as a Schoolteacher at the time of her death on 22nd October 1965.

She was unmarried.

Jessie Borrie Youngson was referred to as a Typist on 31st March 1901 and was also resident at 16 Panmure Place, Parish of St George, Edinburgh at that date.

On 16th July 1911 she was resident at 76 Marchmont Crescent, Edinburgh, when she married Alexander Cuthbert Moffat (M4).


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 5 (Section 6)

They had at least one child, a son Robert Cuthbert Easton Moffat (M5) who was born at 9 Lansdowne Road, Ayr on 3rd March 1918.

Robert married Margaret Tannahill Welsh (M5) in Edinburgh on 15th April 1944.

Robert was a Medical Practitioner, who saw service during the Second World War as a Surgeon Lieutenant with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. Margaret also saw war service as a Third Officer in the Womens’ Royal Naval Service

Robert died in Castle Douglas on 9th October 2000.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 12)

Clementina Leighton Youngson was referred to as a Hospital Matron (Retired), residing at 89 St Albans Road, Edinburgh, at the time of her death on 5th January 1972.

She was unmarried.

Katherine Leighton Youngson died in Edinburgh in1959.

She was unmarried.


MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 3 (Section 9)

(Child 7) Margaret Christian Hay Youngson (M3)
Born on 12th March 1857 at 6 Minister Lane, Old Machar, Aberdeen.

Resided at 48 Skene Square, Old Machar, Aberdeen on 7th April 1861.
Resided at 26 Blackfriars Street, St Nicholas, Aberdeen on 2nd April 1871 when she was referred to as a Message Girl.
She possibly resided at 27 George Square, St Giles, Edinburgh on 4th April 1881 when she was referred to as Christina and as Domestic Servant Cook

She married Robert Winter (M3) (born about 1861 in Cumberland, England) at 15 Cumberland Street, Edinburgh on 24th January 1889.

They both resided at 15 Cumberland Street, St Mary, Edinburgh on 5th April 1891.and at 27 Comely Bank Road, St Bernards, Edinburgh on 31st March 1901.

Robert was referred to as a Police Constable on 24th January 1889 and a Policeman on 5th April 1891. He was referred to as a Foreman Contractor on 31st March1901, 20th January 1913 and 29th March 1916.

MATERNAL LINE – GENERATION 4 (Section 13)

Margaret and Robert had at least five children, all born in Edinburgh, Midlothian as follows:
Ann M Winter (M4) - Born about 1890
Sarah H Winter (M4) - Born about 1891
John E Winter (M4) - Born about 1892
Robert P Winter (M4) - Born about 1893
Elizabeth M Winter (M4) - Born about 1895
On 31st March 1901 the family resided at 27 Comely Bank Road, St Bernards, Edinburgh.
Margaret died at Carstairs Junction, Lanarkshire on 20th January 1913.

Robert remarried at 12 Argyle Place, Edinburgh on 29th March 1916. At that time he resided at 46 Watson Crescent, Edinburgh and he died at Edina Cottage, Edgehead, Ford, District of Cranston, Midlothian.

3. Parish of Fordoun
Lies within the County of Kincardine approximately 11 miles west of the town of Stonehaven on the East Coast of Scotland.

4. Village of Auchinblae
The village is situated within the Parish of Fordoun in the County of Aberdeen. In the 19th Century it was noted as a flax growing area and boasted a flax spinning mill.

5. Logie Pert and Craigo, Forfarshire (now County of Angus)
The Village of Logie Pert is situated about 5 miles to the north west of the town of Montrose on the East Coast of Scotland.

The area had several Bleachfields, two of which were particularly large. One of these was located at Logie Pert and the other at the Village of Craigo.

Craigo also had several mills for flax spinning and related activities. Craigo prospered as a textile village until the 1870s.
