District Governors

A dozen women gathered at the International Assembly in Anaheim, CA to receive the second training before taking charge of their Districts for the year 1996-97. We may be the second batch of Woman Governors, but most of us were the first District Governors in our Districts and in our States; and in her country for Marcelina. Eleven of us were from the United States, while Lina was elected the District in the Philippines.

Although there were twelve of us to begin with, we lost two classmates soon after their terms were over, and I am sorry to say, I cannot write much about them, except to say that we miss them. Karen Kline was from Wilmette, IL; and all of us thought that she would become the First Woman Director of RI. The other was Jo Conibear, Lakeland-Christine, FL. I remember coming to the Zone Institute in a tuxedo, because someone mistook her name to be “Joe”, so she came dressed as a man. We not only have classmates passing away, but we also have “romance” taking place, as one of our classmates, Jean Faterus (now Stewart), of Shamokin, PA, has married another classmates of ours Maurice Stewart, UK.

Everyone was requested to send me their Rotary bios. But they have sent them to me in different formats. I asked some of them to elaborate, as I keep close touch with them, and have noted their accomplishments in Rotary. But they did not want to change anything. I know that Carolyn Schuetz Baysdorfer, Blanch Sloan, Carol Summerlin and Carleen Spano have done a lot more than is in their bios; and have contributed to RI with their experiences, have been trainers of District Governors at the Zone Institutes, and participated at the International Conventions.
