Rotary's Second Batch of Women District Governors

Zone 31, District 6170, Jane Lucas  the Rotary Club of Arkadelphia, AR

LucasBio of Jane Lucas – DG 1996-97

A Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Crossett was elected to serve as District Governor of District 6170 for the year 1996-97. He died very suddenly soon after being elected and Jane Lucas from the Rotary Club of Arkadelphia was elected by paper ballot to replace him. Lucas was president of her club at the time of election and had to finish the term to be eligible to serve as governor then had to be recertified by Rotary. She was the first woman to serve as Governor of Dist. 6170 and the first woman governor in the state of Arkansas. She was one of twelve women Rotary Governors in the world the second year women were eligible to hold that office. Life was interesting for the first woman governor in still mostly all men clubs. All clubs were very accepting and welcoming.

Meetings of Rotary year 1996-97 and locations were:
-Zone Institute and DGE training – Houston, TX.
-PETS – Henderson State University in Arkadelphia
-Passing of the gavel – Arkadelphia Country Club
-International Conference (Induction service) – Calgary, Alberta, Canada
-Foundation meeting – Little Rock Baptist Hospital in conjunction with Dist. 6150
-Ambassadorial Scholarship interviews – Judicial Building – Little Rock
-Zone Institute – Grand Old Opry Hotel – Nashville, TN.
-District Conference – Majestic Hotel, Hot Springs, AR
-International Conference – Glasgow, Scotland

Other highlights/facts of 1996-97 Rotary Year:
-Zones were reorganized placing us in Zones 29 and 30 and we lost our Texas classmates
-Camden Rotarian Ed Inzer volunteered to be web master and we cautiously made our first attempt at developing a District website
-Dist. 6170 attended SCRYE in Dallas for first time
-The paper directory was extremely time bound and time consuming. Dr. Bruce Watterson, Public Relations Director at HSU, (a non-Rotarian) volunteered to do the directory each month and all publications for the year including programs for Dist. Conference, etc.
-There were 6-8 Assistant Governors most of whom were token and those who did perform did
so without compensation.
-On March 1, 1997, several areas of our district were hard hit by a level F-4 tornado. Support, advice and relief funds poured in through Rotary from literally all over the world. Because of the generosity toward this cause, Rotary Foundation giving in the district was deplorable for the year 96-97.
-GSE exchange with Bangladesh

Most memorable moment of the year:
Sitting on a tour bus in Calgary, Alberta, Canada (whose passengers were Rotarians and families) on July 2, 1996 when the reality of being District Governor hit full force for the first time
