Rotary Club Membership
Carleen M. Spano joined the Rotary Club of Miami Beach in 1987 where she became a major donor and member of the Bequest Society. She served as Bulletin Editor, Treasurer, Sergeant-at-Arms, Secretary and President and was a former Rotarian of the Year. After her retirement, she joined the Rotary Club of Miami Lakes, where she served on the board and as club secretary.

District 6990
She has also been active in District 6990 through service as the 1996-97 governor, with 48 Rotary clubs in an international district including Southeast Florida, U.S.A., stretching from Deerfield Beach to Key West and also including Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas. In her year of governor’s service, she was named a co-recipient of the Florida Professional and Business Women’s Annual Glass Ceiling Award. She has served on and/or chaired numerous district committees, including the Group Study Exchange Committee, the Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee, the Nominating Committee and the Finance and Procedure Committee. She has served the district in a number of capacities, including group representative, district secretary, district Foundation chairman, and as district trainer.

State
She helped in the organization of training for the 2006 and 2007 Florida Presidents-elect Training Seminar and has served as the training leaders’ trainer in addition to serving as trainer of club presidents. She has also trained faculty members for the Sunshine Division of the Rotary Leadership Institute.

Zones 33 and 34
At the zone level, Carleen has served on the Executive Committee as Operations Chairman of the Zones 33 and 34 Institute and has been the training leader for governors-elect and governors nominee. She has also participated in zone institutes as a panelist and speaker.

Rotary International
She has held numerous Rotary International appointments. She was an International Assembly Training Leader in 2000 and 2001. Other appointments include serving as 1999-2000 Chair of the North American Affairs Committee, member of the1998-99 Women and Rotary Committee, representative to the 2004 Council on Legislation, zone coordinator for the Annual Fund, zone coordinator for the Member Retention Task Force, zone coordinator for the Family of Rotary and member of the Extension of Rotary to Cuba Committee followed by service as senior advisor to that committee. She has attended 10 international conventions (Portland, Mexico City, Orlando, Calgary, Glasgow, Indianapolis, Singapore, San Antonio, Barcelona, Chicago). She was a panelist on Women in Future Society at the Glasgow convention and a panelist on New Developments in Buenos Aires. Carleen has been a President’s Representative and district conference speaker in California, Florida, Puerto Rico, Nevada, Sicily and Perú.

Professional
Carleen currently serves as the Dean of Academic Affairs at the South Florida Metro of DeVry University. She previously retired in from Miami-Dade College, where she held numerous positions during her 35-year tenure, serving as faculty member, chairperson, associate dean and dean of academic affairs on the North, Kendall, Wolfson and Medical Center campuses.

Education
Her education includes a doctor of philosophy degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Miami. She also holds a master of education degree in Educational Research from the University of Miami where she studied through a U.S. Office of Education grant. Her undergraduate work was completed at Florida Atlantic University, where she holds a bachelor of arts degree in English with minors in Spanish and Education.

Memberships
Professional affiliations include the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an educational leadership society. Carleen is a life member of Phi Delta Kappa, an educational leadership society, as well as a life member of the Florida Association of Community Colleges. She is also a member of the American Association of University Women.
Civic involvements include an appointment to the Town of Miami Lakes Beautification Advisory Committee and service on the Executive Board of the Dade Cultural Alliance.

Personal
Born in Camden, New Jersey, Carleen and her family moved to Florida while she was in high school. A resident of Miami Lakes since 1973, she is married to Robert R. Spano, a mortgage banker, past president of the Rotary Club of Miami Lakes and 1999-2000 governor in District 6990. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in March and have two married sons: Gary, a commercial real estate underwriter, married to Renée (daughter of PDG Joe Sublette, D7770), and Christian, a mortgage broker, married to Jeannie. Carleen and Bob welcomed their first grandchild on May 22, 2010 – Stella Maria Spano.
