Rotary District 7690 Governor 1996-1997


Carol joined the Mayodan Rotary Club in 1987 and in 1990 became the first female club president in the state of North Carolina. In 1996 she became the first woman to serve as a District Governor in North Carolina.

At the district level, she has chaired committees including Interact, Public Relations, Rotary Foundation Scholarships and Alumni. She is currently serving as co-chair of the Polio Plus committee. She is the recipient of the District Service to Youth Award and the District Service Award of the Rotary Foundation. She has served many years as a discussion leader at the Carolinas Multi-District PETS.

At the Zone level, Carol has served on various committees for the Zone Institute. She has also served on numerous panels and as Zone Institute training leader for district governors. She was Co-Chair of the Southland Breakfast during the International Convention in Calgary and chair in Copenhagen.

In 1999 she served as a member of the Community Service Committee of Rotary International and as a panel member at the Rotary International convention in Indianapolis. In 2004 she served on the Rotary International Membership Development and Retention committee, and trained Regional Membership Coordinators. In addition She conducted workshops for officers of clubs with more that 200 members. She served on the 2004 Council on Legislation. In Copenhagen, she was a facilitator for membership discussion groups. In addition, Carol and her Rotary Partner, Gerald, have previously served as President’s Representatives to Pennsylvania and New Mexico district conferences.

A native of Wilson, North Carolina, Carol is a Magna cum Laude graduate of Barton College and holds a Masters degree in Educational Administration from UNC –Greensboro with further study at UNC-Chapel Hill. She was principal of Dillard Primary School in Madison NC. She was three times named Wachovia Principal of the Year and was President of the Rockingham County Principal Association. She retired after 32 years in education and embarked upon her second career as a travel agent. She returned to administration as part-time principal of an alternative school and has recently retired again.

Carol has been involved in various civic activities. She has been a scout leader and children’s choir director. She is past president of the Madison-Mayodan Junior Service League. She has served as Vice-President of the United Way campaign cabinet and member of the reallocation committee. She served as a member of the Rockingham County Strategic Planning Committee and as Board Chair of Communities In Schools of Rockingham County and Board Chair of Rockingham County Smart Start Partnership for Children .

Carol’s husband, Gerald, is also a Rotarian and is past president of the Rotary Club of Madison-Mayodan. Carol and Gerald are Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors, Sustaining Members and Charter members of the Foundation Bequest Society. Carol and Gerald have two sons and four grandchildren.
