From the German Rotary Magazine, April 2008 Article by Rotarian Matthias Schütt, RC Ratzeburg-Alte Salzstrasse Hard to Overlook: POLIOPLUS LONDON With a spectacular light-installation, British Rotarians made their compatriots familiar with Rotary’s most extraordinary commitment: to free the world of the Polio virus. On “Rotary Day”, February 23, 2008, “END POLIO NOW” was beamed for a few hours on the House of Commons next to Big Ben in London. A more central location is hardly available. Rotarian Judith Diment, responsible for PR of Rotary in Britain and Ireland (RIBI), was lucky with her inquiry in finding a helpful administration of parliament, which made this short-termed, but effective action possible. The willingness to help Rotary in its fight to eradicate polio becomes more and more popular. Following the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the foundation of the internet-company Google has provided funds of 3.5 Million USD. These funds are also tied to a counter-performance: Within a year R.I. has to come up with the same amount for vaccination purposes. |
