CLUB HISTORY (from "The First 75 Years" by past member Gordon Parry)

The Inaugural meeting of the club was held on 30 January 1923 in the Chamber of Commerce rooms and the first luncheon meeting (a cold meal for 2s6d) was held at the Savoy Lounge, where the club still meets after 79 years. 28 members attended this meeting, with 3 apologies.

Chartered on 25 April 1923, the Rotary Club of Dunedin was the fourth Rotary club to be chartered in New Zealand.

June 1923 - 3 delegates attend NZ's first National Conference, in Wellington.

February 1924 - 8 delegates attend National Conference, in Christchurch.

At the first AGM on 16 April 1924 there were 56 members.

March 1926 - First National Conference in Dunedin.

1926-27 Peter Barr is second District Governor of District 53 (all of NZ)

1924 - 2 delegates attend Sydney conference.

1926 - 6 delegates attend the Pan-Pacific Conference in Honolulu and 2 delegates attend the International Convention in Denver.

1927 - 6 delegates attend the International Convention in Ostend.

1932 - RI President Sydney Pascall attends the National Conference, which is hosted by Dunedin club.

1934 - Membership reaches 84.

At the 1934 National Conference it was proposed that a Crippled Children Society be formed. This was achieved after a  public meeting was held in the Dunedin Town Hall at which President JL Salmond and members James Hogg, Sir Louis Barnett and Sir Percy Sargood spoke.

1935Paul Harris visits Dunedin.

1938 - Mosgiel club sponsored.

1943 - Alexandra club sponsored.

1946 - Balclutha club sponsored.

1947 - Milton club sponsored.

1948 - First Dunedin awardee of Rotary Foundation Fellowship - John Fraser to Univ. of California.
