SELECTED HISTORIES OF BRAZILIAN ROTARY CLUBS

13). Rotary Club of Belem do Para-

Founded on 30 June 1931 by Jim Roth, who was the chair of the meeting, together with the Government Secretary for Education and Health, Dr. Mario Chermont.
Speakers at the meeting were Jose Mellero Carrero, President-elect, and Jose da Costa Castro, Secretary. Gordon Pickerell asked "Mr. Roth an exhibition on the practical efficiency of Rotary in the world", and Joaquim Chaves, Vice President who was "welcoming public authorities and to give their point of view the exercise of the function of Rotary"

In addition to the above, the following persons took part in the inaugural dinner: Drs Amadeu Golden; Adolpho Alvaro da Silveira; Abelardo Condurú; R. Veiga Cabral; Diógenes Ferreira de Lemos; Leônidas from Albuquerque; Amanajás Filho; Jucá Francisco Filho; Ophyr Loyola; JW Collett; Augusto Alves Teixeira; H Foster Smith; Antony Patric; Moysés S Levy; Carlos Mello de Araujo; Antonio Martins Junior; Benjamin V Silva; A Mesquita; A Jonston; Homero Ribeiro; Abilio A Velho; H Fukuara representing Mr. Mario Guimaraes; and representatives of the State of Para.

The Rotary Club of Bethlehem in Idaho was admitted into the Rotary International on 08 September 1931

14). Rotary Club of Petropolis

The Club was founded by the Rotary Club of Rio de Janeiro, controlled by its then President Roberto J. Shalders.

The installation meeting took place on 12 September 1928 in the  office of Cerqueira Miranda & Memoria Ltd at 88 Independence Avenue,. The meeting was attended by James Roth who founded many clubs in Brazil. It was at least the first time he had attended the actual  installation of a new Rotary Club in Brazil.  

Also in attendance at this first meeting were the following founding members, who hold the following ratings: Solomon Antoun (Military equipment), Luiz Mora (Fabrics), Frank Nitzsche (Photography), Jose Fernandes de Oliveira Leite (Medicine - Gynecology), Osorio Magellan Salles (Bank - Credit), Octavio da Silva Costa (Land agent), Joao Soares da Veiga (Medicine – road accidents), Alcindo Sodré (Journalism), Altino Sodré (Manufacture of Semi), Francisco Gomes (Urban Cars), Francisco Firmo Fernandes Heffer (Marine services), Carlos Loeffler (Manufacture - Bullets), Arthur Agripino of the Cross Loureiro (life insurance), Áquila Rocha Miranda (Property agent), Domitian F Monteiro da Silva (Dairy), Eugênio Lopes Barcelos (Law) , Alfredo Silva Campos (Lattice), Francisco Cosenza (Retail - Articles Electrical), Andre Dias (Aerial), Raul Nim Ferreira (Engineering - Mines), J. Merritt Fordham (Dental), Felipe Gelli (Furniture), Henrique Ritmmeyer Son (Watches), Eugênio Werneck (Pharmacy), Jose Alves da Cruz Coutinho (Magazines), Carlos Signorelli (Clinic), Durval Egydio de Souza (Lighting Electric), Benjamin Tannebaum (Quarries), Amaro Vasconcelos (Fabrics retailing), Alvaro Balcony (Wheat farming), Fernando Villela (Medicine), Rs. 15). Rotary Club of Pelotas

The club was founded on November 24, 1928, at its meeting in the halls of the Grand Hotel, with the presence of Roberto Shalders, president of RC Rio de Janeiro and James Roth, an official of Rotary International. Founding members included bankers, traders, industrialists, farmers, doctors, lawyers and journalists.

On a proposal by Dr. Luiz Fernando Osorio, it was resolved that the Brazilian Santos Dumont would be invited to take part in one of the Club lunches and visit the field of aviation that has been given his name.

The names of the founders cannot be found but the first president was Dr. Francisco Jose Dias da Costa.

The Rotary Club of Pelotas was admitted to Rotary International on 09 January 1929.

16). ROTARY CLUB FOR PORTO ALEGRE

The inaugural session took place on 10 October 1928, a lunch held in the Club of Trade, attended by twenty-two professionals with emphasis on the elite of society and also including Jim Roth and Heriberto Coates.

Its founders were: Adolfo Luce; Alberto Bins; Annes Dias; Carlos Azevedo; Carlos Voelcker; Eduardo Secco Filho; F D Leonardo Truda; Fausto de Freitas Castro; Fernando Caldas; Fernando Moura Gertum; Frederico Dehane; Guerra Blessmann; Ismael Chaves de Barcellos; Heitor Rangel; Ismael Torres; Joao Luderitz; Jorge Elchenberg; Jose Bertaso; M Sands; MW Fayley; Mario Barcellos; and Oswaldo Rentzsch.

Ismael Chaves de Barcellos was elected President, proposed by the Rotary Club of Porto Alegre.

The Rotary Club of Porto Alegre was admitted to Rotary International on December 21, 1928
