SELECTED HISTORIES OF BRAZILIAN ROTARY CLUBS

17). The Rotary Club of Rio Grande  

The inaugural session took place on 1 December 1928, and the magazine “Rotary Brazil” is quoted as saying "like most of the inaugural meetings of Rotary, the lunch was fine."

In their pre-arranged places at the table sat:- Gustavo Poock Junior; Jesus B. Vieira; Dr. Miro Alves; Commander Fernando Bromberg; Albino Vaz Dias; Waldemar Thiesen; Renato Penigotti; Eduardo Daniel; Carlos Malloni; Angelo Zanotta; Arthur Lewison; Dr. Fernando Duprat da Silva; and Edgar Fontoura, all linked to this new unit of Rotáry.

Furthermore, Colonel Justinian Simoes Lopes; Antonio Mendes Filho; Lorea Luiz Alberto de Sá Rheingantz; Alcides Barcellos; Dr. Jose Francisco Dias da Costa; Mario R de Oliveira; and Alípio Cadaval; representing the Rotary Club of Pelotas, and also James Roth, an official of Rotary International.

With that opportunity, the first president of the Club, Gustavo Poock Junior, was elected and sworn in.

The representatives of the Rotary Club of Pelotas took this opportunity of suggesting that the two clubs should jointly propose to Rheingantz Francisco, for the immediate construction of a highway linking the two cities.

The Rotary Club of Rio Grande was admitted to Rotary International on January 20, 1929.

18). The Rotary Club of Campos

It was the year 1928. Miranda Jordan, then president of the Rotary Club of Rio de Janeiro, receives correspondence from the eminent lawyer Godofredo Saturnino da Silva Pinto and presents it to the American James Roth.

"Jim" asked him to meet the most prominent and diverse community of professionals in the fields in order to hear him talk about the thinking and beliefs of a citizen who dreamed one day compose a force in world media that serve the understanding between men as a basis for Peace and Global Understanding.

On 5 October 1928, in the meeting hall of the former prime Commercial Association, attended the following professionals: Adalberto Marques Cardoso, accounting; Carmelo Anthony, vicar;; Atiliano Chrisóstomo de Oliveira, sugar manufacturing; Carlos Alfredo de Azevedo , Fine fabrics - retail; Cicero Alves Cruz, medical doctor; Christopher Pereira Devoto, distributor of Ford; Sunday Vianna da Motta Faria, steel foundry; Eduardo Moura, finance - commercial bank; Emidgio Vieira de Morais, hydraulic engineering; Francisco Ribeiro Vasconcelos; Godofredo Saturnino da Silva Pinto, law – lawyer; Gregorio Pereira of Mirando Pinto, advocate; Perlingeiro José Junior, sugar - buying and selling; Lafayette Roquete, banking; Luiz Guarana, alcohol - manufacturing; Manoel Ferreira Machado; Manoel Ferreira Machado, dry and wet - cement; Tolipan Mark Berman, jewelry - manufacturing; Mario Sampaio Ferraz; Perlingeiro Miguel Neto, federal farm - collection; Temístocles Silva, graphic arts - typography.

To highlight a historical fact: it was the first Rotary Club in Brazil to include in its social frameworks a priest.

             The Rotary Club De Campos was admitted to Rotary International on 19 November 1928.

19). Rotary Club of Recife.

             In the first days of April 1931, Mr. James H. Roth, Special Commissioner of Rotary International, held the last preliminary meeting for the founding of the Rotary Club of Recife at the residence of Dr. Oscar Berardo Carneiro da Cunha and there attended all founding members: Harold William Atkinson; Joaquim Bandeira; Fernando Simões Barboza; Oscar Berardo Carneiro da Cunha; Jose Bezerra Filho; Lauro Barbosa; Manoel Britto; Joao Cardoso Ayres Filho; Antonio de Oliveira Cavalcanti, Arthur de Siqueira Cavalcanti; Caio de Lima Cavalcanti; Joao Cleophas Oliveira; Joao Aureliano Correa de Araujo; Ulisses F Correia; Ramiro Antonio Costa; Tomaso Fabaro; Joaquim Arruda Falcao; Innes Gent; Frederick S Goodman; Peter Jurisch; Murillo Lagreca; Edgard Teixeira Leite; Joao Magalhaes Filho; Lacerda Luiz de Menezes; Jose Apolinario Morais de Oliveira; Jose Albino Pimentel; Luiz Salazar; Carlos de Lima Cavalcanti; and Manoel Baptista Mendes da Silva.

             On April 08 from the inaugural meeting was held, in the halls of the Hotel Central, when the same Dr. Jose Bezerra Filho was sworn in the office of President; Manoel Baptista Mendes da Silva (vice president); Luiz Lacerda de Menezes (secretary); Antonio Ramiro Costa (Treasurer); Joaquim de Arruda Falcon (Sergeant at Arms) and Peter Jurisch (Director of Protocol).

             The foundation of the Rotary Club of Recife was signed by Rotary International which, through telegram addressed to Jim Roth, it said that 150 thousand Rotarians from around the world expressed their joy at the formation of the new club.

             The Rotary Club of Recife was admitted to Rotary International on May 16, 1931, under Charter number 3454

20). The Rotary Club of Aracuja

  After some preliminary meetings in the residence of Tavares of Braganza, with the Rotarian mentors from the Rotary Club of Bahia, and other people of this capital amidst festivities, the meeting was held on 4 December 1934, at Hotel Marozzi.

29 professionals and businessmen of the capital, chosen for their education, high professional ethics or business and social life and family standing, met with the aim of founding the Rotary Club of Aracaju.

  The inaugural meeting included Moraes Sarmento, the Governor of District 72; Lauro Borba from the Rotary Club of Recife; and Jaime Tavares representing the Rotary Club of Bahia, sponsoring club of Aracaju.

  The founding members present were:

Gonçalves; Gonçalo Rolemberg Leite; Heitor Arlie Tavares; Joao Firpo Filho; Joao Quintiliano da Fonseca; Jorge de Campos Maynard; Jose Couto de Faria; Jose Garcês Vieira; Jose Vieira de Santana; Jose Vieira de Vasconcelos; Quintiliano da F Sobral; Juliano Calazans Simoe; Julio Pinto Filho; Leonardo de Carvalho Leite; Manuel Franco Freire; Maximino Ribeiro;
Nicola Mandarino; Oscar Nascimento; Otto Watson Leite; Sabino Ribeiro; Waldemar Mendonça.

  Manuel Franco da Fonseca Freire and Epiphanio Dória were, respectively, the first president and first secretary of the new Club.

  The Rotary Club of Aracaju was admitted to Rotary International on 11 April 1935.
