SELECTED HISTORIES OF BRAZILIAN ROTARY CLUBS

21). The Rotary Club of Fortaleza

  In the beginning of 1933 appeared in Ceará the first conversations, the first contact they would get in Fortaleza to “Sew the Seed” of Rotary.

  The political situation was very different.

  The parties in that post-Revolution period were somewhat disorganised and society was preparing for the elections of representatives to the Constituent Assembly of 1934.

  It was also a period of drought that forced workers from the fields and prompted their flight to the capital.

  The church had misunderstood the purpose and objectives of Rotary and had not supported its creation.

  But none of that prevented its continued spread and growth.

  The work of Lauro de Andrade Borba, then Governor of District 72, the valuable contributions of Nestor de Figueiredo from the Rotary Club of Joao Pessoa, and the dedication of those caring members of society who embraced the idea of serving, gave rise to another birth.

On 21 December 1933 there was a meeting that would bring together the first elements of the Rotary Club of Fortaleza, being hailed at the time an interim Board, which was responsible for ensuring the fate of newly established club until its official foundation.

Thus was formed the Provisional Directors:
 Pedro Philomeno Ferreira Gomes - President;    Alvaro Weyne – Vice President;    Raimundo Girão and Edgar Dutra Nunes - Secretaries;   Jose Silva Thomé of Saboya - Treasurer

  However, the official foundation occurred only on 7 May 1934 with the presence of the Governor Lauro de Andrade Borba and Dorgival Mororó from the Rotary Club of Joao Pessoa.

  It was in Pálace Hotel and thirty-one founding members were in attendance.

  On that occasion it was defined that the regular meetings should occur on Saturdays, lunch, starting at 11.00 hours, always in Pálace Hotel.
  By acclamation, the meeting appointed the Council which in turn elected the Directors to lead the activities of the Club during the 1934/35 Rotary year. All the Provisional Board retained their positions with the addition of Carlos Ribeiro as Member, and Clóvis Matos, as Director of Protocol.

  The following persons were considered the founding members:

  Alvaro Weyne; Abdenago Rocha Lima; Alberto Sa; Antonio Fiúza Pequeno; Adriano Martins; Carlos Ribeiro; Clóvis Janja Campos Junior; Clóvis Matos; Cesar Cavalcante; Demosthenes Brígido; Esmerino Gomes Parente; Edgar Dutra Nunes; Eurico Monte de Almeida; Francisco Saboya; Fernando Fiúza Pequeno; Humberto Oliveira; JR Torres de Melo; Jorge Moreira da Rocha; Jose Leite Maranhao; Jose Thomé de Saboya e Silva; Joao da Frota Gentil; José Sergio Jos dos Reis Junior; Joao Dummar; Jose Barros Maia; Oswaldo Studart Filho; Paulo Sarasate; Philomeno Pedro Ferreira Gomes; FP Pereira de Miranda; Raul de Souza Carvalho; and Raimundo Girão.

 The Rotary Club of Fortaleza was admitted to Rotary International on July 12, 1934.

22). The Rotary Club of Vitoria

      When the whole world was suspicious of the purposes of the great institution of Paul Harris, before its objectives were widely understood, here came the citizen James H. Roth, then an official of Rotary International, with the objective of founding the Rotary Club of Vitoria, around the year 1934.

He brought together, in one of the rooms of the "Mercantile" in Vitoria, Mr James H Roth (or simply JIM), with a group of men of goodwill, led by Moacyr Barbosa Martins, where he made a presentation about the image Rotary and his claim of building the island and welcoming a new Rotary unit.

There were present at that meeting the following professional leaders of the city, all considered founding members:
Alberto de Oliveira Santos; Alfredo Gonçalves Filgueiras; Anísio Fernandes Coelho; Anselmo José da Cruz; Armando de Oliveira Santos; Aurino Quintaes; Benjamin Fernandes; Carlos Xavier Paes Barreto; Dan M Tykomiroff; Francisco Fundão; Francisco Sarlo; Heliomar Carneiro da Cunha; Hermann Ramos; J. A. Ribeiro; J. B. Polliti Jayme Coelho de Almeida; João Nicolussi; Jones dos Santos Neves; José Meira Quadros; José Simplicio Azevedo Pio; Josué Prado; Lúcio Alberto Silva; Moacyr Barbosa Soares; Nicolau Von Schilgen; Nuno dos Santos Neves; Oswaldo Cruz Guimarães; Ottorino Avancini; Pietrangelo de Biase; Roberto Lange; Roberto Serrat Espindula and Wolmar Carneiro da Cunha.

The most vocal supporter and one who knew most of Roth's integrity was Heliomar Carneiro da Cunha who without hesitation and with acclamation from those pre4sent, proposed to form the first Board of Directors, which comprised -

President - Alberto de Oliveira Santos;    1st Vice-President - Nicolau Von Schilgen
2nd Vice-President - Josué Prado;   Secretary - Moacyr Barbosa Soares;
Treasurer - Jayme Coelho de Almeida;   Diretor of Protocol - Jones dos Santos Neves;
Members - Aurino Quintaes,  Oswaldo Cruz Guimarães,  Pietrangelo de Biase.

On September 1, 1934 the new members of the new club settled into a festive dinner in the dining room of the aristocratic Club Vitoria.

The Rotary Club of Victoria was admitted to Rotary International on 08 October 1934.

23). Rotary Club of Bagé.

 The birth of the Rotary Club of Bagé was surrounded by a controversy that remained for several years.

 The District 72 Governor for the 1934-35 year was Jose Carlos de Morais Sarmento from the Rotary Club of Juiz de Fora, based across the surface of Brazil. Reading his monthly letters Monthly during the first half of the year, his concerns with some clubs crossing territories for membership had created a crisis and caused the temporary suspension of the RC Pelotas. Pelotas was only reinstated to the Rotary International on 10 December 1934, possibly with the help of Jim Roth. This fact became a little hard to believe since Pelotas was the godfather of the Rotary Club of Bagé, or rather, one of the godparents because, in reality, the Rotary Club of Bagé had the privilege of having two clubs godparents, the RC Pelotas and the RC Rio Grande.

 Despite this issue, a festive dinner was held on 11 January 1935 when the Secretariat of the club sent invitations to the four clubs that existed in Rio Grande do Sul, which are those of Porto Alegre, Pelotas, Rio Grande and Santa Maria.

 Representing the Polatas Club were Francisco Gastão Duarte, Victor Bergogho and Henrique Krentel Filho,  whereby the latter would later join RC Bagé under the classification of dental articles.

   Those attending the club’s installation dinner included the following companions who were all considered founding members:
Adolpho Luiz Dupont - journalist, director of the newspaper "The Duty";
Afonso Siqueira Junior - manager of Banco do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul;
Alziro Marino - Judge of the District of Bagé law;
Anselmo Garrastazu – Government precurement;
Antonio Garicochea Mata - Industrial;
Ary Azambuja - merchant;
Arnaldo Faria - lawyer;
Arthur Santayana Mascarenhas - MD;
Carlos Kluwe - MD;
Charles Sturgis - owner of a network of cinemas;
Dario Bina - Merchant;
Fileno Gonçlves - broker of animals;
Floriano Bittencourt - buyer and trader;
Harry Gordon Petty - industrial:
Hector Salomni - bacteriologist;
Joao Carneiro - manager of the Electrical Power Plant of Bagé;
Jose Carrion Moglia - buyer and industrial;
Jose Gomes Junior - Pecuarista, industrial and trader;
Kanitar Do Espirito Santo - manager of the Bank of Brazil;
Lourival Araujo - manager of the Bank of the Province of Rio Grande do Sul;
Luiz Mercio Teixeira - medical and pastoralist;
Manoel Rodrigues  D'Athayde - buyer and industrial;
Nercio Peduzzi - merchant;
Rodolpho Moglia - industrial;
Segundo Deiro - trader.

On January 16, 1935, three days after the founding of the Club, Jim Roth sent his report to the headquarters and the Rotary Club of Bagé was admitted to Rotary International on February 12, 1935.
