My experiences in Rotary Fellowship
Dr. Toshi Ihara, RGHF board member

My Rotary Fellowship started with Misen club members in Hiroshima West R.C. 15 years ago by joining IFRFR ( International Fellowship of Running and Fitness of Rotarians ), whose chairman was PDG Harold Friend whom I knew through " The Rotary-No-Tomo ", the Japanese Rotarian Journal.   He visited us two years later with his wife.
Misen club is one of the fellowships in Hiroshima West R.C. whose object is promoting a healthy mind and body by jog, walk or climb mountains.   We, 10~20 members, visit Miyajima island on the 4th Sunday to feel physical and mental health by praying at the shrines or temples and climbing Mt. Misen in Miyajima.  Miyajima  is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, 45 minutes drive and ferry from Hiroshima City.

In December 1996, Itsukushima Shrine on the island with its splendid structures and harmonious natural beauty of Misen's primeval forest was designated as a World Cultural Heritage.
In April or in November, cherry blossoms or colored leaves season, we have been having the International good will walk on Miyajima island sponsored by the Rotary club of Hiroshima West (D-2710) inviting the foreign students in Hiroshima area.
Rotary exchange students, Rotary interact students and IFRFR members out of Hiroshima.   After gathering in the open space of main gate in Miyajima

the participants choose one of four courses;  Jog course, Cross country course, Mt. Misen climb course and History study walk course.
After we enjoyed each exercise, we have a friendship party
At a ceremony time I read a warm message sent by E-mail from IFRFR chairman Harold Friend, Boca Raton, Florida, U.S.A.   While we are having Japanese food, Beer, Wine and Sake, the foreign students from a wide varieties of countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Poland, Peru, Taiwan, Thailand and U.S.A. make a speech by their languages.
It is really an international meeting.
On Nov. 16, 2008, we will have the 15th Miyajima international good will walk.  It will be very nice if some of RGHF members could join to the history study walk.
In June, 2004, at the Osaka Rotary World Congress, we set the IFRFR booth in the Rotary fellowship room
and enjoyed jogging with some runners from other countries, especially a daughter of an American Rotarian

In June, 2005, we attended to the parade like the picture at the Chicago Rotary World Congress.

Hiroshima West R.C. is the friendship R.C. with Chicago R.C. The picture, upper right, is
Rotarian Robert C. Knuepfer Jr., the President of Chicago R.C. in 2004-2005 and me.
Now it's on 2008-2009.   Time passes so quick.   I wish I could fly to Birmingham.
