“SPACE, THE FINAL FRONTIER! THESE ARE THE VOYAGES OF THE STARSHIP
ENTERPRISE; IT’S FIVE YEAR MISSION…”: THIS QUOTATION AT THE BEGINNING OF
THE TELEVISION SHOW (AND THE MOVIES) WAS ABOUT EXPLORING SPACE AS THE
FINAL FRONTIER. ACTUALLY THE ‘FINAL FRONTIER’ IS THE UNDISCOVERED
COUNTRY OF AN IDEA, AN IMAGE OR AN IDEATE (IMAGE PLUS IDEA). AND TO
FIND/CREATE THIS IDEATE.
A CREATIVE PERSON MUST HAVE A SPECIAL SPACE TO WORK IN, SOMEPLACE THAT
IS JUST HIS OR HER OWN. FOR ME, IT IS MY STUDIO BUT EVEN THAT IS NOT A
SET PLACE. IT CAN BE A CONVERTED GARAGE FOR LARGE WORKS, A PORCELAIN
ENAMEL PLACE FOR WORKS ON STEEL, A LOCATION WHERE A MAJOR WORK IS TO BE
INSTALLED, THE COLLEGE WHERE I TEACH, A PARK IN THE SUMMER TIME, A PLAY
BEFORE IT STARTS (WITH MY SKETCHPAD IN HAND- JUST IN CASE AN IMAGE
STRIKES MY INNER EYE), OR A JUNCTURE OF LINES WHILE WALKING IN DOWNTOWN
HOUSTON (WHICH I STORE IN MY MIND’S EYE TO DO LATER IN THE ESTABLISHED
STUDIO). SOMETIMES, THE STUDIO IS A TABLE IN FRONT OF THE TELEVISION SET
WITH BOXES OF SUPPLIES STORED BELOW (JUST IN CASE). THE SPACE IS
IMPORTANT TO HAVE BUT IT CAN BE PHYSICAL SPACE OR IT CAN BE IMAGINATIVE
SPACE IN THE MIND. BUT IT MUST BE A PERSONAL, ARTIST SPACE THAT SUITS
THAT ONE CREATIVE HUMAN BEING AND NO OTHER. IN THAT SPACE, THERE IS
ORDER (EVEN WHEN ‘MY ORDER’ SEEMS LIKE CHAOS TO ALL OTHERS WHO SEE IT).
OUT OF THIS SPECIAL ARRANGED SPACE COME THE FINAL WORKS OF ART THAT
BREATHE THE SAME AIR AS THE WORKING SPACE. THE SPACE, THE PROCESS AND
THE PRODUCT IN THE CREATIVE ACT OF MAKING A WORK OF ART IS ONE IN THE
ARTIST’S WAY OF SEEING IT (AS IS THE INSPIRATION AND THE PASSION TO MAKE
THE WORK OF ART).
THESE FIVE RECENT PAINTINGS ARE THE CULMINATION OF TEN YEARS OF
EXPLORATION INTO SEEING THE WORLD FROM THE SKY (CALLED PARALLAX VISION)
AND INCORPORATING ELEMENTS FROM THE PROCESS OF CREATING THESE WORKS OF
ART (THE COLORS AND TEXTURES OF PAINTING ITSELF AND SOME OF THE ELEMENTS
OF ORDINARY LIFE- LIKE STICKS THAT HAVE BEEN WHITTLED WHILE
RECOUPERATING FROM MINOR SURGERY).”' “May the beauty
we love be what we do!” Rumi, 13th
